David D. Horton
of Smithboro, NY
David D. Horton, affectionately known as Dave to those who knew him best, was a man who lived life to the fullest and made everyone around him happier for it. Born on the Fourth of July in 1962 in Waverly, NY, Dave's mother would often say he was a "true firecracker". He certainly lit up the lives of those around him until his passing on July 22, 2023, at his home in Smithboro, NY.
Dave was blessed with a large and loving family. His parents, Duane and Beatrice "Petie" (Gowan) Horton, instilled in him a sense of humor and love for life that was infectious. He was a devoted father to his children, Dylan (Kara), Lauren (Tre Donson), and Derek Horton, and a doting grandfather to Braxton, Braylie, Everly, Emilia, and Jaxon. He shared a special bond with his favorite sister, Debbie (Jeff Sherman), and his brothers, Howard (Pam) and Jack (Stacy) Horton. His Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and many friends, especially Mike and Andrea Rossi, will miss the warmth and laughter he brought to every gathering.
Dave was a proud graduate of Tioga Central High School, class of 1980. His athletic prowess was evident as he excelled in baseball and wrestling, even representing his school in Poland. His love for sports extended to his career, where he spent 26 years working at Walmart. As the head of Shipping & Receiving and a sports aficionado in the Sporting Department, Dave was a beloved fixture at work, always ready with a funny story or a helpful tip.
Dave's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was a dedicated supporter of Tioga Football and wrestling, often found running the line at football games. He was also a master of the grill, known for the best BBQ in town, a talent only surpassed by his passion for the NY Yankees, NY Giants, and the Razorbacks. In his younger days, Dave earned the nickname "Diamond Dave" as a standout softball player for Root's Tavern, adding another layer to his local legend status.
Dave was a man who could be best described as loving, funny, and generous. His sense of humor was infectious, and he had a knack for making people laugh even in the most mundane situations. As the great Bob Hope once said, "I have seen what a laugh can do. It can transform almost unbearable tears into something bearable, even hopeful." Dave lived by this philosophy, spreading joy and hope wherever he went.
In remembering Dave, we celebrate a life filled with laughter, love, and generosity. His spirit, like a firecracker, was vibrant and full of energy, lighting up every room he entered. He lived his life with a comedian's timing, always ready with a joke or a funny story to brighten your day. His memory will continue to bring smiles to our faces and warmth to our hearts. We will gather to share stories, laughter and love in remembrance of the man who touched so many hearts on Sunday, July 30th from 1 – 4 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Memories, condolences and your favorite Dave photo may be shared by visiting his guestbook at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com In lieu of flowers, Dave would want his legacy and his love of wrestling to help the youth at Tioga Wrestling Club, 225 Guiles Rd., Owego, NY 13827 in his memory.

Dave was a great friend. We had countless good times playing softball and going to away football games. Over the last few years we spent a lot of time after games at Mr Ryders house reliving the nights game and old stories from the past. We had a lot of laughs. He will be missed by many but never ever forgotten. Say hi to Mr. Ryder for me Dave, RIP. My heart goes out to his family.
