David Duyane Knight, a warrior in both spirit and service, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025. He lived a life full of adventure, loyalty, and love, leaving an unforgettable impact on everyone who knew him.
Born in Indianapolis, Dave was a proud member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, serving as a Green Beret and paratrooper from 1979 to 1984. Stationed at Fort Devens, Fort Bragg, Fort Benning, and Fort Leonard Wood, he was an 18C engineer sergeant, embodying the strength and resilience of his fellow brothers-in-arms. Never one to back down from a challenge, he also became a tandem master skydiver, embracing the thrill of the jump with the same passion he had for life.
After his military service, Dave became a master craftsman, known not only for his skill as a carpenter but for his ability to fix anything. Whether it was a home, a vehicle, or something completely unexpected, if it was broken, he could make it work again. He excelled at everything he tried, always pushing himself to master new skills with determination and precision.
Beyond his career, Dave was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and riding motorcycles and quads. He had a deep passion for teaching his kids-whether it was how to cast a fishing line, build something with their hands, or simply appreciate the world around them. He also found joy in playing guitar, filling quiet moments with music that reflected his soul. His quick wit and infectious humor could brighten any room, bringing joy and laughter to those around him. But above all, he had an enormous heart-one that gave selflessly and loved fiercely.
Dave is survived by his loving mother, Judith Strubbe (Eugene), who meant the world to him. He was a devoted brother to Tamra Wamsley (John), Allison Knight-Greenlee, Dorothy "Deedee" Knight, and Sharon Knight-Opsal (Jason).
He is also survived by his five children: Nicole Brown (Ryan), Lindsey Knight, Aaron David Knight, Lillian Knight, and Kaleigh Knight; and his grandchildren: Willow Novelle, Magnus Williamson, Zephyr Orion, Opal Magnolia, and Eros Nightingale; as well as Kyrstin Nicole, Olivia Therese, and Lorelei James.
He is further survived by his former partner of 20 years, Jeni Fenton.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, Harold "Butch" Knight Jr., and his grandmother, Dorothy Muse.
He also leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold him close in their hearts. Among them, his many adored nieces and nephews, who affectionately knew him as "Uncle Hairy Butt"-a name that spoke to the warmth, playfulness, and humor that made him unforgettable.
Family and friends can gather to honor his life from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2025 at G. H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 1605 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, with military honors to follow. His legacy of love, laughter, and bravery will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of David's life will be held following the funeral service from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Southland Community Church, 5800 W. Smith Valley Road, Greenwood, Indiana 46142.
Rest easy, Dave. Your watch is over, but your spirit lives on.
