David Michael Longeway of Dover passed away Monday, February 23, 2026 at Kent General Hospital. He was 80.

Mr. Longeway was born March 6, 1945 in Long Beach, California to the late Kenneth Leighton Longeway and Dorothy Shanahan Longeway.

A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, class of 1968, he served in the United States Navy for 8 years. As a Lieutenant, Mr. Longeway received an Air Medal for successfully ditching his A-3 Intruder aircraft in the Mediterranean Sea. He saved all 7 crew members on board after the arresting cable broke when landing on the USS America. After his military career he worked as an airline pilot, which took him to many parts of the world. He flew for Saudi Arabian Airlines for 9 years, Asiana Airlines for 4 years and finished his career with Southwest airlines retiring in 2005. After retirement he and his wife Terry spent their summers at their beloved home of over 40 years in Bethany Beach, DE, and winters were spent in San Carlos, Mexico, at their home on the Sea of Cortez.

Mr. Longeway, affectionately answering to "Grumpy", enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren, Alex, Laura, Emma, and Katie Longeway, and his great grandson, Gunnar Longeway.

He was a lifelong runner and was proud to have participated in the first Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Marathon in 1984. He enjoyed kayaking, working with his hands, and watching old movies from his extensive collection.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Terence (Terry) Mahoney Longeway of Dover; son Kyle Spencer Longeway and his wife Nicole of Elkton, MD; brother, Kenneth Longeway (Barbara) of Pine Hurst , NC; sisters, Annette O'Keefe of Biloxi, MS, Jeanine Bennett of San Diego, CA and Janis Bottorff (Scott) of Ridgecrest, CA; grandchildren, Alex, Laura, Emma, and Katie Longeway, and great grandson, Gunnar Longeway.

Inurnment will be at a later date at the United States Naval Academy Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation.
