David Lutgring Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fountain Memorial Funeral Home & Cemetery on Dec. 12, 2025.
David Lutgring passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at the age of 84. Originally from Lake Charles, he was a long-time resident of Lafayette.

David is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Leonora Ann Trahan Lutgring, of Lafayette, LA; his three children, Melissa Theriot, of Lafayette, LA, Michael Lutgring and his wife, Wendy, of Charlotte, NC and Michelle Lutgring and her boyfriend, Brad, of Edmond, OK; his brother, Terry Lutgring, of Moss Bluff, LA; his six grandchildren, Garrett Theriot and his wife, Sara, Kellen Theriot, Allyson Lutgring, Lindsey Lutgring, Leigh Ann Lutgring and Emily Lutgring; his two great-grandchildren, Beau Theriot and Charlotte Theriot and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Thomas and Aline Molbert Lutgring and his sister, Raenell Hooten.

David devoted his career to the young men and women in the Lafayette Parish School System. For 36 years, he served as a coach, teacher, assistant principal, principal and mentor. David not only cherished the opportunity to positively impact the young people he served, he embraced his responsibility with unwavering commitment to ensuring they were on the right path.

David was a dedicated servant of God and a longtime parishioner of St. Jules Catholic Church, where he was a lector, eucharistic minister and constant volunteer for whatever the Parish needed. He was also a proud veteran and served in the United States Army Reserves.

Those who knew David knew that family was his greatest joy. He was the embodiment of what it meant to love unconditionally as a husband, a father, a grandfather and a great grandfather. David was forever grateful for the times that he spent with family. He was always ready, at a moment's notice, to go to Baton Rouge, Houston, Charlotte or just the other side of Lafayette for time with family.

David also gave endlessly to those he cherished. Whether it was family or friends, his time and efforts were yours if you needed or wanted it. No favor was too big, no ask too small. He lived to do for others. David also loved caring for his pets through the years, and most recently, his dear Sophia, who will miss spending quiet evenings on his lap watching TV.

Few things put a bigger smile on David's face than fishing with friends and setting the hook on a monster sac-a-lait. The stories of fishing shenanigans are endless, and there was always a moment of prayerful thanks by the wives when he and the guys made it home. David also loved sharing meals with friends and cheering on the Saints and LSU Tigers.

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home at 1010 Pandora St. in Lafayette, LA on Monday, December 15, 2025, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm with a eulogy and rosary at 6:00 pm.
