David W. Mohler, age 73, passed peacefully on Monday September 23, 2024, at the Four Seasons Retirement Center in Columbus, IN. He was born September 3, 1951 in Columbus, OH to Dr. Floyd W. Mohler and Janet (Birch) Mohler. He moved to Columbus, IN at the age of 2. His mother, Janet, passed when David was just 10 years old. Floyd married Patricia S. (Davis) Mohler in 1963, who raised David and loved him as her own, forming a strong lifelong bond.
David was a graduate of Columbus North High School in 1969, and went on to earn several degrees including a B.A. at Indiana University, a B.S. at USNY, an M.A. at Xavier/UC, and a M.S. at UPenn. David had a successful career in clean energy, most recently serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy for the US government, where his responsibility was clean coal and carbon management. He was very passionate about his work with international clean energy programs, including a worldwide energy consortium, working at length with the governments of China and other countries to reduce the carbon footprint. Prior to this, he served as Senior VP/CTO of Duke Energy in Cincinnati, OH and then Charlotte, NC.
David was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, both in Columbus, IN and in the Outer Banks, NC. He had a worldly view and a thirst for knowledge, often reading several books at one time. David had a love of humanity, a love of nature, and cared deeply for the environment, dedicating his life to creating better clean energy sources for the world. Once retired, he enjoyed spending time with family at the beach in NC, and also at a cabin on the lake in the woods of Indiana.
David leaves behind a wife, Donna (Anderson) Mohler, of Manteo, NC, a son Varis Mohler of Shelburne Falls, MA, and a daughter Emily Mohler of Manteo, NC. David is also survived by his mother, Patricia S. Mohler of Fishers, IN, his brother Tom Mohler (Kim) of Indianapolis, IN, his brother Dr. Steven Mohler (Debra Ann) of Columbus, IN, his sister Susy (Andrew) Northrop of Carmel, IN, and first cousin Debra (Harold) Force, along with many loving sister and brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
