David Curtis Nivens Sr., 59, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025.
Born on April 24, 1965, in Oklahoma to Roosevelt and Barbara Nivens, David grew up in a loving family and graduated from Coyle High School in 1983. He went on to attend Langston University before moving to Texas, where he continued his education at Houston-Tillotson College. While there, he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., a brotherhood he was deeply proud to be part of.
David began his professional life as a teacher's assistant at Blackshear Elementary School, where he positively impacted the lives of many students. Later, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army.
David was formerly married to Sharon Hill, and from their union came three beloved children: Stephanie Nivens, David Nivens Jr., and Erika Nivens. Though the marriage ended in divorce, David remained a devoted Father. He never remarried, choosing instead to dedicate his life to his children and grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy.
He is survived by his children,Stephanie Nivens David Nivens Jr., and Erika Nivens his grandchildren, Trinity Smith and Kendrick "KJ" Kemp Jr.; his father, Coach Roosevelt Nivens Sr.(Lea),
brothers, Victor(Reem), and Roosevelt jr. (Karla), four nephews, one niece, and a host of loving aunts, uncles, extended family, and friends. A special friend Cathy.
David was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, and his mother Barbara Nivens.
He will be remembered for his warm heart, infectious laughter, love for basketball, soulful music, and endless games of dominoes. David had a gift for making people smile and always found a way to bring joy to those around him.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to family. He will be deeply missed.
We would like to give a special thank you
We would like to extend our deepest thanks to our mother, Sharon Hill Smith whose unwavering love and strength have been a guiding light throughout this journey. Though she had remarried, her bond with our father never faded. She spoke to him several times a day while he was in the hospital-praying, encouraging, and lifting his spirit. Even when he entered hospice care and could no longer respond, she continued to speak to him over the phone, making sure her voice and prayers were heard in his final days.
We would like to honor our beloved stepfather, Kenny Smith, not only for the role he played in helping raise us with strength and love, but for the deep respect he showed as a fellow Soldier. In a true act of brotherhood and humility, Kenny gifted him some dress blues to our biological father-also a proud serviceman-so he could be laid to rest with full military honor. From Soldier to Soldier, he upheld his oath and extended a final salute. His compassion, dignity, and sense of duty will never be forgotten.
Sidney Williams for assisting during this difficult time.
Aunt Delois Anderson for her prayers, loving us unconditionally, and the photos.
