David Mortensen Orton passed away May 26, 2025, peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones.
David was born April 24, 1936, to Claude T. Orton and Ruby Mortensen Orton. He graduated from Parowan High School in 1954. He attended one year of college at Utah State University. He then transferred to College of Southern Utah (now known as SUU) where he played on the basketball team.
David met the love of his life, Mary Etta Stubbs, in high school. They were married on June 8, 1956, in the St. George Temple. They have four children, David S. (Linda), Kerry S. (Jill), Pamela (Mark), Neil S. (Leslie).
David worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company for 10 years delivering Coke products to many locations in Southern Utah. He then went on to manage two gas stations and opened the South Main Chevron in Cedar City. In his retirement years he went to work as a custodian at Parowan High School where he made many life time friends with the teachers and students.
David enjoyed all sports, horse races, fishing at Lake Powell, deer hunting and spending time with his family. He loved riding in the mountains, listening to music and he took great pride in making sure his lawn was green in the summer.
David was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held several callings throughout his life. He served in two Bishoprics, was a member of the high council and an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple.
David is survived by his loving wife, his children, 11 grandchildren: Jason, Dean, Karley, Kyle, Nicole, Brandon, Lindsey, Paisley, Taylor, Bradi, Raigen and 15 great-children. He is also survived by in-laws Clarence and DeAnn Stubbs, Linda Mecham, Elna Stubbs, Becky Stubbs and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his son Kerry, his parents, in-law parents, his brothers and sisters-in-law Eugene and Joy Orton, Chad and Beth Orton, Errol and Brenda Orton, his sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Verl Taylor, and in-laws Homer and Donna Stubbs, Howard Stubbs, Betty and Bud Perkins Larry Stubbs and Ron Mecham.
David was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and he will be sorely missed.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the Parowan Third Ward Relief Society Room (90 S. Main Street, Parowan, UT). A grave side service will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Parowan City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Missionary Fund or Humanitarian Fund.
