David Pope Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Walnut Lawn Funeral Home - Springfield on Dec. 24, 2025.
David K. Pope, 70, of Springfield, Missouri was welcomed into his heavenly home on December 21, 2025, following a short battle with cancer.
David Kenneth (aka Pete) Pope was born December 27, 1954, in Moberly, Missouri, to Dennis and Hattie (Palmer) Pope and was the fourth of the Fab Five children. When he was 12, the family relocated to Springfield, Missouri. He attended Logan Rogersville schools, graduating in 1972, and is remembered for his infamous motorcycle ride through the halls of LRHS on graduation day.
Dave celebrated 50 years of marriage to the love of his life, Agnes (McClernon) Pope on March 1, 2025. They met at the local hangouts on South Glenstone while still in high school.
Dave was a railroader. He began his career in 1973 working for the Frisco Railroad in Springfield, Missouri, which later became the Burlington Northern. He relocated to Kansas City when the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe merged and retired as a Machinist after 42 years of service.
Dave had an incredible mechanical mind, matched by few, and would frequently recall how to assemble or repair something from memory. He always knew what to do. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, he competed in flat track and drag racing which led to the opening of Dave's Cycle Repair & Parts which he operated for 16 years.
Dave is survived by his wife, Agnes, son Joshua (Christine), daughter Alicia, grandsons Zachery (Courtney) Brown, Joshua (Abbi Jo), Colton (s/o Shyanna), Jase and Asa Haigh; great grandchildren, Charlotte, Henry, Graham, Millie, Vincent, and Valerie. He is also survived by siblings Carolyn Brooks, Wayne (Jeannie) Pope, Sharon (Bill) Hatfield, Ronda (Barry) Zeigler and a long list of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by daughter Valerie (Pope) Haigh, parents Dennis & Hattie Pope, and a niece, Denna (Brooks) Flickner.
The family will receive visitors at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home January 2, 2025, from 6 to 8 PM.
Funeral Service will be at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home January 3, 2025, at 10 AM, with interment to follow at Clear Creek Cemetery.
