David Carson Price, 87, of Pendleton, IN, passed away peacefully in Grand Rapids, MI, on February 17, 2025. After a long journey with dementia, he can finally rest and once again remember the wonderful and fulfilling life he led.
David was born on November 21, 1937, in Dundalk, MD, the son of Thomas Morris Price Sr. and Emma (Carson) Price. He married his best friend and love of his life, Marilyn Jo Ann (Hoover) Price, on September 3, 1961. David always joked that he met Marilyn at the wedding altar. The year before, they met when Marilyn was the maid of honor for her sister Kay (Hoover) Sanders, and David was the best man for his college roommate James Sanders' wedding. Less than a year later, they also walked down the aisle together.
David loved to share stories of his youth, such as tending to the family goats and traveling by train to New York City by himself at a very young age to see relatives. David graduated from Dundalk Senior High School in Dundalk, MD, in 1956. During the summer between his junior and senior years, David attended basic training at Sampson Air Force Base in the Finger Lakes District of New York. This led to his joining the Air National Guard of Maryland, where he served as an F-86 Sabre technician with the A/3c 104th Fighter Squadron. He was honorably discharged on March 10th, 1958.
David graduated with a Bachelor's degree in science from Anderson College (now University) in 1965 and a Master's in education from Ball State University in 1972. He taught high school science at the Indiana State Reformatory in Pendleton for 33 years. He continued teaching classes at the local Indiana Ivy Tech nursing program for several years after retirement.
David was a loving and supportive husband and father who was very active in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Webelos. He was also very supportive of family trips around the country to see relatives or weekend camping trips, especially to southern Ohio. David and Marilyn celebrated a milestone anniversary during a 2-week trip-of-a-lifetime to Hawaii that was full of adventure, such as snorkeling, Zodiac and submarine tours, and much more. They both spoke fondly of that trip for years.
He was always eager to help with his daughter's DIY projects, and there were many-including but certainly not limited to building fences, remodeling bathrooms, making thimbleberry jam, repairing a few roofs, blowing insulation in attics, and helping her move to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where they had camped for several summers prior.
He and his son shared an interest in history and often exchanged books with one another. David S. sparked a desire for international travel with trips to London and southern England, Wales, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, and Brno (Czech Republic). David had been an active member of the Pendleton Church of God and the local Red Cross. He also enjoyed wood carving and woodworking (including making bowls on a lathe, intarsia, etc.). He built a wooden dinghy by hand from a kit with his brother Charles, who also built one. He kept a beehive and collected honey for several years. He was also very much into family genealogy, which resulted in numerous trips to libraries in Ft. Wayne, Morgantown, WV, and other places for research. David and his son even took time during a trip to Wales to visit the National Library of Wales to do research.
David was preceded in death by his wife (2002), father (1986), mother (1998), brothers Thomas Morris Price Jr. (2009) and Charles Henry Price (2018), sister Ruth Maud Price (2014), and in-laws Patricia Price (2023), Frank Hoover (2010), Jackie Hoover (2020), Jeanne Hoover (2007), and Robert Hoover (2004).
David will be missed his children Kari Price (Keweenaw Bay, MI) and David S. Price (Kentwood, MI), sister Terry (Marshall) Lawrence (Anderson, IN), in-laws Kay & Jim Sanders (Marshall, TX), Jill Price (Waukesha, WI), Fernanda Hoover (Columbus, OH), numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
There was so much more to David than just Dad, though to us, that was his most significant role - he was also a friend, a coworker, a colleague, a cousin, a brother, a stand-in paternal figure, a handyman, and the list goes on and on. His passing was neither sudden nor unexpected, but his family will miss him dearly. David's wishes were to be cremated and placed beside his beloved wife. There will not be a funeral, but a celebration of life will be scheduled for later this year. We invite you all to share pictures or memories. His wish was to laugh, reminisce, and smile together during this time.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Price Family Endowed Scholarship at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The scholarship was established to honor David C. and Marilyn J. Price, who were lifelong science and math educators, respectively, and passionate about community service and serving others, especially those less fortunate. The scholarship is awarded annually to an Electrical Engineering student who has demonstrated the same spirit of serving the community as David and Marilyn did. To donate, go to the link below and enter the donation amount in the "Other" box and "Price Family Endowed Scholarship" in the Description box.
