David Randall was truly an unforgettable character. I met him over 40 decades ago when he purchased a house on my street in Union Lake, MI.
The Randalls and the Clancys became close friends and remained friends all of our lives.
I knew David as a neighbor, friend, husband of my best friend, Marilyn , and co-faculty member at OCC. David was Department Head of the
Math Dept at Highland Lake campus of OCC. He was respected by the
administration, faculty members, and students alike. He was knowledgeable, always prepared and dedicated to maintaining high standards at OCC. Anything less would have meant shortchanging the students. David excelled in many of the sports he was interested in such as golf, bridge, and pool and ignored the ones he was not interested in, i.e. computers.
David was an avid reader, enthusiastic in many things and loved
a lively discussion. He was probably the best conversationist I ever know.
I debated competitively all 4 years of high school and 4 years in college but I don't recall winning a single debate with David. There are many subjects past, present and future I would love to discuss. I'll miss that.
David had a brillant mind. I remember being at home alone when
FDR died and I felt that that great mind was silenced forever. I felt the same recently when David died.
David was the proud father of three adult children, Tom, Mark and Dana. All of them are high achievers and great contributers to society. David told me many times throughout the years that their mother was entirely responsible for the kids success. I know he would want me to
write this now.
David held a doctoral degree but insisted on being called Dave.
David loved spenting time with his family at their cottage in Indian River.
David and his children recall wonderful childhoods at the cottage and playing in the water.
I knew David over 40 years and on many different levels, but it
was only after reflecting about those years, after his passing this month,
that I realized I didn't know him at all. How sad!
David will be long remembered and sorrowfully missed.
Brad and I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to all members of the Randall family. You have certainly supported us through the years.
Please call on us if we can help you.

Little did we know when we met David and Marilyn in 1957, it would lead to 50 years of friendship. We both taught with him, Margaret in Clarkson and Chuck at O.C.C. However, our memories are more personal than professional. We have many shared memories, such as golf, movies, plays, birthday celebrations, and travel with all the children to Chicago, Toronto, and of course the cottage. David and Chuck spent many hours discussing sports and politics after golfing. Last summer was very upsetting when David decided to quit golfing.
After the children were grown our friendship grew even more as we had more time to spend together including a trip to Europe.
Our most treasured memory was in 1989 when Mark married our daughter Ann Marie, and we now share two wonderful grandsons, Matthew and Michael.
We miss his insights on politics, movies, and books. He will truly be missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you always,
Chuck and Margaret

Losing someone is never easy. My thoughts are with the family in this most difficult time.
Dave was a colleague more than a friend. He was already at OCC when I and other wide-eyed, young, inexperienced instructors arrived in the fall of 1965. It was his caring and experience that guided us those early years at OCC and the Highland Lakes Campus. Through his strength, intelligence and compassion, we all became better teachers. These traits he extended to every facet of work at OCC, not the least of which was to the students under his tutelage. His students had a solid understanding of mathematics when they left his class. He leaves a legacy which will be remembered.

Please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss. May happy memories carry yo through this time.
David has a place in my memory book of my time at OCC. I worked with him when we were housed in the buildiing you had to pass coming in to the Highland Lakes campus. There was great joy in announcing the birth of Dana as we had signs in our windows that could not be missed.
When David received his doctorate, I would tease him about how he should sign his name. Told him to be sure to use his full name as Dr. D.R.Randall might look a bit redundant.
David will be missed by all who knew and worked with him. He was the first and only "boss" I ever took to a banquet.

This is for Tom, Mark, Dana, Matthew, and Michael. I have known your dad and grandfather for more than forty years as a friend, mathematics colleague, and golfer. I came to OCC as a fairly new teacher in 1967 and soon realized that the glue that kept the Mathematics department together was Dave. He was respected by all the teachers and made sure that we maintained a high standard for our students. Dave's guidance was so critical during the early years of the college and he left it to us that followed to try and continue that legacy. As the college grew Dave's insight on the hiring of new faculty was very important in maintaining the quality of the mathematics department at OCC. Dave made sure that when a student completed their mathematics program at OCC they had a background in mathematics that would stand up at any college they decided to transfer to. As a golfer he was the best, always straight down the middle and then close to the pin when he got on the green. I worked hard to try to stay with him on the course but he would alway beat me in the end. He was a great friend and I will miss him forever I hope he gets to play a round with Sammy, Ben and Bobby.

I have nothing but wonderful memories of Dave--as the first head of the Math Dept at Highland Lakes campus. He was a great dept head at a new college, everything just getting organized. In particular I remember that he told us we were not to encourage the students to cal us by our first names, as the Soc dept did! They later found out that students had students had more respect for Mr. and Mrs. than for "Joe" and "Jane"!
So sorry for the tragedy. Dave was a wonderful teacher and colleague.

David Randall was my great uncle. I always remember as a child going to David and Marilyn's house for dinner around the holidays. I used to love playing with the huge train set that David had set up.
I remember going to visit them at the cottage on Burt Lake during the summer and going for boat rides, and swimming in the Lake. It was always a great time at the cottage.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the whole family, David was a good man and he will be greatly missed.

One of my first memories of David was when he helped Marilyn deliver the hobby horse to our daughter Amy, that Dana had outgrown. That horse went through all of our kids and later moved on to another family.
I used to see him with Marilyn from time to time and enjoyed conversing with him. We later rented their cottage on Burt Lake and had many more conversations about the Awesome characteristics of the lake.
I was nervous when our son, Ryan chose Albion over MSU to further his education. It was David who assured me that Albion, in his opinion, was THE place to go. He even went so far as to say that although he was a Michigan man, through and through, he would have been just as thrilled if Tom, Mark, or Dana had gone there instead of Michigan. He may have been making that up but it sure make me feel better. It was David I enjoyed sharing the good news with, when Ryan was accepted into medical school right out of college. David was interested to know that every pre-med major in his class was also accepted into various medical schools around the country. I remember David commenting that it was all due to Albion's superior reputation.
Greg and I send our heartfelt sympathy to Marilyn, Tom, Mark, and Dana and wish the happy memories they have, stay with them for the rest of their lives-

My first acquaintance with David was when he married Marilyn. Over the years our children grew up together until we moved to Florida.
My husband, Fred, and he often played golf together. If there are golf courses in Heaven, David and Fred will be playing the links!
We have remained friends since moving to Florida----visiting one another.
Although I had not seen David for several years, my memories of him remain fresh. He shall be missed by all of us who knew him.

David Randall was my uncle. I was a young child when David married my Aunt Marilyn, so he has been part of my family for most of my life. David was a quiet, serious person but was always interested in engaging conversations involving sports, politics, movies and education. I was influenced by David, Marilyn and my sister being educators, so I also became a teacher. I remember being very proud and impressed when David received his Doctorate Degree. I had never personally known anyone that had achieved that honor.
I always looked forward to visits to Burt Lake. David would always take us for boat rides through Indian River into Mullett Lake. We also had fun swimming and water skiing. What fun memories.
The last time we saw David was this past Christmas at our house in Dundee. He seemed to enjoy talking and laughing with Bill and hearing silly stories told by Holly's father-in-law. He appeared to enjoy being around the family again. David hugged me when he left and told me he had thoroughly enjoyed himself. I will always remember that last hug.
Our family will miss David.
We all have to hold the special memories close to our heart.

Dave made the world a better place. Dave was a sensitive, caring, and intelligent person.
Dave and I were part of the original math faculty at OCC. He was at the Highland Lakes campus and I was at the Auburn Hills campus. We spent lots of time together developing and coordinating math courses. I always welcomed Dave's insight and knowledge.
I remember Dave telling me that he went to see "Sound of Music". He said that he realy enjoyed it and had tears while watching. Only a real man could admit he cried during a movie in the 1960's.
Even though I haven't seen Dave in over 30 years, I shall miss him.

Dear Marilyn and Family,
David Randall was there in 1965 when I and many other enthusiastiac, young, inexperienced faculty arrived to begin our careers as college mathematics teachers. He and a handful of others were contracted two months earlier to create a mathematics curriculum for the newly established Oakland Community College. It was immediately obvious to me that Dave was the most qualified to orient and lead us through those hectic years that followed.
Dave became the Mathematics Department Chairperson at the Highland Lakes Campus, and it was my good fortune to be his office partner for the next 25 years. I was in the daily company of an organized, articulate, and intelligent intellectual who served as my mentor and confidant. I cannot recall a single word of criticism, but countless times where his encouragement spurred me on.
When the history of OCC is written it would be proper to
have Dr. David Randall's contributions recorded. He planned budgets, he monitored curriculim, he scheduled course offerings, he hired and supervised adjunct faculty, he participated in campus decision making, and he maintained the quality of mathematics education at Highland Lakes.
Above all, he was an accomplished and effective teacher.
Dave was my friend. Our weekly golf outings were perpetual lessons in humility for me. Those were good times. I admired him, and he has had a lasting impact on my life.
Sincerely,
Terry Cremeans

We feel shocked that we can no longer enjoy the brilliant conversation of our neighbor and friend, David Randall, he was truly an inspiration for his students and friends. We send our condolences to his family and our love to them all.
I was just remembering all the family dinners, trips to the theatre, rounds of golf, and discussions of politics and current events that were shared with David- he always had something significant to share. He leaves behind a legacy of three very successful children and two beautiful grandchildren. Marilyn, our love to you especially who made a warm loving home for David.
