Camping On the Back Forty.
When we were 10 or 12 we started camping on David´s farm. I would come over from my farm close by and his dad would drive us back to the woods. A little creek ran through the property, not big enough for a boat but there were small fish and crawdads. I had a Duluth pack my grandfather had given me and we loaded it up with food, utensils, a Coleman stove, and some other stuff. We also had a tent. We built a fire and cooked meals and enjoyed sleeping in the woods. Dave had a trap line and we would check it to see if any animals had been caught. In those days there were bounties on animals considered pests. The raccoon was one. Sometimes if the water was up we would and sometimes we would catch a fish. Dave and I both knew something about cleaning fish from family outings. We knew how to scale and gut a fish. Not much fish was left after cleaning.
They were one or two night affairs for Dave and me. It was a precious time for a couple of kids our age.
I will always remember you, Dave. Good times.
