David Selcer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Epstein Memorial Chapel - Columbus on Jan. 28, 2025.
David Mark Selcer, age 81, of Columbus, Ohio, died on January 25, 2025. He was born in Cleveland on Lincoln's birthday to the late Sylvia and Lester Selcer in 1943. He is survived by his wife, Susan Merwin Selcer; his brother, Richard D. Selcer (Nikki); his children and step-children, Daniel J. Selcer (Theresa), Anne Lesley Selcer, Emily Selcer Cortez (Dan), Jeffrey P. Pierce, Emily Manley (Dan) and Kelly Walker (Lisa). He has seven grandchildren, Sitka Luong Selcer, Elias Cortez, Evie Cortez, Regan Manley, Roslyn Manley, Ella Walker, and Dylan Walker.
He attended Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio. A graduate of Northwestern University and the Ohio State University College of Law, David was a partner in the law firm Baker & Hostetler, where he practiced labor and employment law, coordinated the labor and employment section of the firm's Columbus office, and tried many class-action Equal Employment Opportunity cases. He was a member of the Columbus, the Ohio, and the American Bar Associations and sat as a member of the ABA Employment and Labor Law Committee. He handled many arbitrations and collective bargaining negotiations and conducted many labor and employment seminars. He also taught commercial law as an adjunct professor at Capital University Law School.
After retirement, David authored the award-winning Buckeye Barrister Mystery Series, comprised of five murder mysteries set in Columbus and Akron. He also wrote three novels of historical fiction, one set in the post-Civil War era, one during the late nineteenth-century era of immigration to the United States, and one during the controversies over gun control and mass murders in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. David's community involvement included eight years on the Board of Trustees of Temple Israel, pro-bono legal services for the Temple, service on other public boards, and service as an officer of Jewish Family Services.
He loved traveling the world, enjoyed spending time with Sue at their Sarasota home, being with his children, writing, and fishing. He also loved boating, despite his nautical abilities leaving much to be desired.
A service of remembrance will be held at 3:30 PM on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at Temple Israel, 3100 E. Broad St.
