David Shinn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bowser-Johnson Funeral Chapel Inc. on Mar. 7, 2026.
David Brett Shinn Sr., age 67, passed away March 6, 2026 in Topeka. He was born on October 30, 1958, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Daryle Shinn and Melva Carroll Nolting Shinn.

David grew up in Topeka and attended Highland Park High School, where he began to distinguish himself athletically. He later dedicated 24½ years of service to the Kansas Department of Administration, Division of Printing, before retiring. Never one to sit still, David went on to become the proud owner of Floor Reflections Janitorial Service, faithfully serving clients throughout Kansas and Missouri with integrity and care.

An athlete at heart and in spirit, David's competitive drive and natural talent were evident early in life. As a youth, he competed in Junior Olympics track and field events, earning gold medals in every event he entered, including the 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash, and 220-yard dash, and anchoring the 440 relay. He recorded impressive times of 10.5 seconds in the 100 and 22 seconds in the 220. He continued his athletic success as a member of the Highland Park High School basketball team that captured the 5A State and Grand State championships in 1976.

David also had a deep love for the game of golf. On any beautiful, sunny day, there was nowhere he would rather be than on the course, enjoying the challenge of the game and the fellowship it brought.

Faith was central to David's life. He was a devoted member of the Central Church of Christ in Topeka and later the Church of Christ in Overland Park, Kansas. Committed to deepening his understanding of Scripture, he completed Bible History courses through the External Studies Department of the Sunset International Bible Institute in his early forties. He found great joy in studying God's Word and sharing it with others, including volunteering his time to minister at the Kansas Department of Corrections. His faith, compassion, and willingness to serve left a lasting impression on many lives.

David was preceded in death by both parents and his brothers, Daryle "Brian" Shinn, Dennis B. Shinn, Michael Shinn, and Charles Justin Shinn.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Donna Jean Gonzales-Shinn; his son, David B. Shinn, Jr. (Sara); his daughter, Brooke Shinn; and his stepson, Andrew K. Rogers; his brother, Derrick B. Shinn; his sisters, Rochelle "Shirelle" Canady (Terry) and Raedell J. Shinn; along with a host of extended family members and dear friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

David will be remembered for his strength, determination, deep faith, competitive spirit, and love for his family. His legacy of perseverance, service, and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew him.
