David Holt Stokes, 61, entered into rest on Thursday, December 26, 2024, in Stephenville, Texas. A funeral service for David will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 30, 2024, at the Cowboy Church of Erath County with Rev. Werth Mayes officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Comanche, Texas. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the Cowboy Church of Erath County from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Arrangements are by Lacy Funeral Home.
David was born on July 27, 1963, in DeLeon, Texas, to Floyd Holt Stokes and Wiley "Jean" (Wright) Stokes. He earned his undergraduate degree and graduated from law school by the age of 22. David began his legal career in Stephenville, and by the age of 30, had established his own law practice, which his son, Cole, joined in 2017. David quickly became an acclaimed trial attorney and tried over 300 jury trials to a verdict. He argued for his clients at every level of the Texas judiciary, including the Texas Supreme Court, Court of Criminal Appeals, Appellate Courts and Trial Courts. Passionate about his work as a criminal defense attorney and plaintiffs' attorney, David dedicated nearly 40 years to helping those in need. Outside of his career he enjoyed hunting, raising cattle, playing chess, and was an avid reader and history buff. Above all, David cherished spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his mother, Jean Stokes of Stephenville, Texas; children, Joseph Stokes and wife, Mandi, of Stephenville, Texas, Cole Stokes and wife, Kayla, of Stephenville, Texas, and Sheridan (Stokes) Esthay and husband, Kameron, of Waco, Texas; grandchildren, Lane, Luke, Leah, Olivia, and Ella Stokes; Brother, Floyd Wiley Stokes and wife, Kelly, of Stephenville, Texas; and his lifelong friend, Jerry Walker.
He is preceded in death by his father, Floyd Stokes, who passed away in 2019.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorials to be made to the Fosters Home for Children, 1779 N. Graham St., Stephenville, Texas 76401.

David Stokes had an air of elegance and sophistication about him and went into each case with the intensity any client would hope for.
Mr. Stokes was truly insightful and very generous with his time, and your concern was approached as if it was his as well.
Professional and humane-both on a level that made him unique.
I'm so sorry his family and friends have lost this exemplary individual who was unafraid to partner with anyone who needed him, in and out of the courtroom. It was a real honor to have met Mr. David Stokes.

My deepest condolences to the Stokes family. David and I went to high school together and we both went on a double date together during that time. I´ll never forget it nor will my wife Jennifer! Prayers for comfort and peace. Greg Cisneroz
