Davide B. Porrazzo, 71, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2024 after a long, courageous battle with kidney disease.
Born June 6, 1952 to George R. Porrazzo and Mary M. (Ranese) Porrazzo, David ("Dave") spent his childhood in the North Shore of Boston with his two older sisters, Bettina and Toni, and his younger twin brothers, George and Joe. Dave had a great sense of humor, which he got from his father, and he loved to pull pranks such as calling random numbers and asking "Is your refrigerator running? Well, you better go catch it!". Dave had many hobbies and interests throughout his life, but his true passion was music. He played bass guitar and drums in several bands throughout high school and in the Navy and he liked to jam with his nephews, Teddy and Rob, his uncle Johnny, and his stepson Gary.
Dave graduated from Peabody High School in 1970 and joined the U.S. Navy in the summer of 1972. After boot camp, Dave attended Great Lakes Naval Training where he learned about underwater fire control and torpedo safety. It was at this training where he met his lifelong friend Bob Mann. Dave was always quick with a joke and loved to entertain his shipmates with his dry humor in the chow hall. In 1973, Dave and Bob attended "C school" in
Groton, CT and on a weekend trip home, which they would do frequently with their Honda motorcycles, Dave introduced Bob to his sister Toni. They hit it off instantly and have been married for almost 50 years now. In spring of 1974, Dave graduated sub school and reported to the USS Billfish, a nuclear submarine, where he got to travel across the globe from Alaska to Western Europe. Dave was the Billfish's ship photographer and while on the ship he earned his silver dolphins. While in the Navy, Dave had what he would describe as the experience of a lifetime. He learned skills that he would carry with him throughout his life, and he met people who he would never forget.
After he left the Navy, Dave joined the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he worked for 25 years. He started out in the combat systems office, where he tested weapons, sonar, navigation systems and participated in several sea trials. Dave received a bachelor's degree in business from New Hampshire College and completed a Dale Carnegie business course.
Dave lived in
Eliot, ME with his first wife, Debra Hale, their horses, cats and two beagles, Chet and Buddy. Dave met his second wife Sandy Allen and her two children, Gary and Lori, in 1984 and they later moved to
Wells, ME. They were married in Las Vegas, NV in 1986 and they had their daughter, Valerie a few years later. Dave was an incredible father who worked hard to support his family and spent many late nights proof reading book reports, decorating posters and coming up with elaborate and magical bedtime stories. He enjoyed watching sports, going to baseball games and playing softball. In 1993, Dave and his brother George opened Maineland Computer Store on Route 1 in Wells. Dave worked long hours, sometimes around the clock, to make the store successful, of which he was extremely proud. His stepson Gary came to work with him later and he taught him everything he knew about computers, igniting a passion that would later drive Gary's career.
In 2002, Dave, Sandy and Valerie decided to ditch the snow shovels and head west to join George and his family in Victorville, CA. While in Victorville, Dave worked at Desert View Memorial Park, a cemetery and funeral home. He loved being able to bring peace and comfort to families during one of the most difficult times in their lives. Dave and Sandy followed Valerie to Irvine, CA where she went to college a few years later and then they all eventually moved back to Maine.
Dave was a jack-of-all-trades and a wealth of knowledge. He was perpetually curious, and his inquisitiveness and keen intellect drove all of his pursuits. He would read anything he could get his hands on, and he retained almost every detail that he read. He memorized the Surgeon General warning on the back of the toothpaste tube when he was young and could recite it word for word 50 years later. Even right up until his last moments, Dave was able to recall details from events that occurred decades ago. Dave was as handy as he was smart and between the skills he learned from his father while they built houses together and the knowledge he gained in the Navy, Dave could fix or build anything. Above all, Dave loved his family. His children and grandchildren were his greatest accomplishments and he bragged about them regularly. Dave was the definition of perseverance and strength and although he struggled with his health for many years and survived colon cancer, he never complained and never took life for granted.
Dave is predeceased by his mother, Mary, and father, George, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Dave is survived by his daughter Valerie (Porrazzo) O'Brien and her husband Allen O'Brien of Kingston, NH, his stepson Gary Lowell and his wife Vaida Lowell of
Gorham, ME, his stepdaughter Lori (Lowell) Morgan and her husband Chris Morgan of
Kennebunk, ME, his grandchildren Molly O'Brien, Allison (Morgan) Morse and Curtis Morgan and great grandchildren Rowan and Brynn Morse. He is also survived by all four of his siblings, Bettina "Betty" (Porrazzo) Laverriere and her husband Don of
South Berwick, ME, Toni (Porrazzo) Mann and her husband Robert "Bob" of
Puyallup, WA, George Porrazzo and his wife Debbie of
Fort Worth, TX and Joe Porrazzo and his wife Diane of Sahuarita, AZ, his Godchildren, Tina Teal, George Mann and Alex Porrazzo, his ex-wife Sandy Allen, her husband Jerry Chevalier, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins who miss him dearly.
