Debra J. Gilmartin, affectionately known as Debbi, passed away on Wednesday evening, October 15, 2025, at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on May 7, 1965, in Raritan Township, NJ, Debbi was a lifelong resident of Flemington where she made great contributions both professionally and within her community.
Debbi's career began in 1987 when she joined the Hunterdon County Roads & Bridges Division. Her hard work was evident as she advanced to the position of Assistant Supervisor of Accounts, from which she eventually retired in 2020. She was a well-respected figure and left a lasting impact on her colleagues.
A graduate of Hunterdon Central Regional High School in 1983, Debbi went on to embody the spirit of community service and volunteerism throughout her life. She served as a member of the Flemington Fire Department for over 30 years, taking on numerous roles, including her tenure as Fire Chief from 2011 to 2013—the first female chief in Hunterdon County. Debbi was also an active participant in the Firemen's Exempt and Relief Associations, holding the position of secretary, showcasing her commitment to public safety and community welfare.
Debbi was a passionate enthusiast of both sports and the arts. She was an avid fan of the New Jersey Devils and the New York Football Giants. Additionally, her hobbies included rescuing German Shepherds, as she could always be seen walking her beloved canine companions, most recently Diesel, around town. Moreover, she enjoyed photography, and gardening. Finally, she held a particular fondness for comic books, collecting figurines, and enjoyed both DC and Marvel movies.
Debbi is survived by her brothers, Dave Gilmartin and Dan Gilmartin; as well as her nephews, James, Tyler, and Mathew Gilmartin; and cousins Kevin Gilmartin and Jennifer Dean. She was predeceased by her father, Francis "Frank" X. Gilmartin, and her aunt and uncle, Betty and John Gilmartin.
