Delbert William Herrbold, Jr., 79, of Sturgeon Bay, died Saturday morning, June 7, 2025 at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay with family at his side.
He was born March 22, 1946 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of Delbert William Herrbold, Sr. and Lila Florence (Rankin) Herrbold. Del grew up attending St. Joseph Parish and Parochial School. He graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School with the class of 1964. Del went on to study business at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
He served his country with the United States Army, entering into active duty on December 9, 1968. Del was honorably discharged from the Army on September 8, 1970 with the rank of Sergeant and remained on reserve status until December 8, 1974. Through his military service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Marksmanship Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Call Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and received one Overseas Service Bar and two Purple Hearts.
Del first met Sharon Marie Wotochek at Belgian Days in Brussels in 1968. They were united in marriage on April 5, 1969 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Del and Sharon initially resided together in Stevens Point before moving to Wausau. Del studied at the American College of Financial Services. He worked as a chartered life underwriter and chartered financial consultant for Farm Bureau Financial Services over 42 years until his retirement on December 31, 2019. To those Del helped insure their life's work (and to others who knew him), he was a good, honest, and kind person. He got to know a lot of people throughout the state and communities in which he covered.
Del was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Parish. He was a longtime member of the Weber-Tess AMVETS Post 51, V.F.W. Post #3088, and Rotary Club, all in Sturgeon Bay. Del was a founding board member of Crossroads at Big Creek, where he served as President for 13 years. He played for The Stein in the Old Timer softball league in Sturgeon Bay. He was an avid hunter - turkey, elk, and deer who enjoyed hunting in Richland Center and also going out to Colorado. Del liked going on family trips. Through his insurance company, he was able to visit Mexico, Jamaica, and Switzerland, among other places.
Del will be deeply missed by his wife, Sharon, with whom he was blessed to share over 56 years of marriage; children, David Herrbold of Sturgeon Bay, Elizabeth (Daniel) Williams, Matthew Herrbold, both of Sturgeon Bay, Dr. Brian (Bethany) Herrbold of Jefferson City, MO; grandchildren, Subrina (Julio) Ramirez, William Herrbold, Isabella Herrbold, and Alaina Herrbold, Michael (Tyler) Francis, Makia Francis, Jacob Francis, and Trenten Francis, and Greyson Herrbold and Gideon Herrbold; great-grandchildren, Aubrey Ramirez, Julio Ramirez, Jr., Mila Ramirez, and Emmy Ramirez, and Ryker Francis; siblings-in-law, Ann Herrbold of the Town of Sevastopol, William (Janice) Wotochek of Forestville, Sandra Waterman of Sturgeon Bay, and Cindy (George) Stamos of the Village of Ashwaubenon; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Brent Francis; brother, Daniel Herrbold; and other relatives.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025 at Huehns Funeral Home, 1414 Michigan Street,
Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 with Dcn. Mark Bortle officiating. Del will be laid to rest in Bayside Cemetery in the Town of Sevastopol with Military Honors by the United States Army and the Weber-Tess AMVETS Post 51 in Sturgeon Bay.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 20, 2025 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
