At Belmont Abbey, he played baseball, basketball and soccer, captaining the soccer team in 1963 and 1964, and was named to the NCAA Coaches First Team All South and Honorable Mention All-American Teams in 1964. He also captained the Debating Team from 1962-65.
He received a J.D. from the University of Louisville in 1968 and practiced law in Louisville until his death, focusing on litigation, immigration and international law.
He was co-campaign manager for Mayor Frank W. Burke of Louisville in 1968 and for U.S. Representative Romano L. Mazzoli in 1970. He was Jefferson County Campaign Manager for Kentucky Governor Bert T. Combs in 1971.

We are all blessed to have known Dennis Clare . A loving and a devoted husband , a very loving and a well providing father . A great grandfather and a wonderful lawyer . His sense of humor and dedication to justice was a disarming weapon . His gift for courtroom oratory and a knack for coining memorable phrases . Dennis was a bright addition to the pantheon of best known American barristers . The clients Dennis cared about the most were the immigrants nobody knows . I will miss you my friend .

My sincere condolences to the entire Clare family.
How blessed you were for so many years, and how priviledged was I to have known Dennis since his arrival at Belmont Abbey College back in the early sixties.
We immediately bonded, along with guys like Joe McDermott, Bernie ( "Redzo" ) Brennan, "Mac" McLoughlin, Sam O'Conner, Bill Dockery And a slew of other characters. As the song goes, "The laughs we shared will echo thru the years" !!! Dennis was truly an "Abbey Gentleman", a wonderful friend who lived a full and successful life. May he continue that journey as he moves on to a new world. Rest in Peace, my friend !!
