Joseph (Joe) E. Duerr, age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 19, 2025, in Louisville, KY.

Born on July 19, 1939, in Louisville, KY to the late Joseph S. Duerr and Ruth Wunderlin Duerr. He was a member of St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church and St. Agnes Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by his brother James (Jim) Duerr. Joe is survived by his wife Patricia Chapman Duerr of 58 years and his children Dana Duerr Wright (Theo), Patrick Duerr (Sandy), his five grandchildren Joseph, Sarah, Elizabeth, Lauren and Julia, his brother-in-law David Chapman, and sister-in-law Betty Duerr.

Joe attended St Paul's grade school, St. Xavier High School, received his bachelor's degree from Bellarmine University, master's degree from Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism, and a master's degree in political science from the University of Louisville.

Joe was hired as a News Editor for The Record Catholic newspaper and then was asked to be the Managing Editor. He worked for The Record for 43 years and retired at the age of 75 in 2014. His contributions as Editor lead to numerous individual and publication awards. One of his most notable interviews was with the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Joe was a wonderful photographer and during his personal time spent many hours on the backside of Churchill Downs taking pictures of the Derby horses. His love for horses and sports led him to write for the Courier-Journal sports department, where he cultivated lifelong friendships. Joe loved his Northwestern Wildcats and in 1995 he traveled with family to see them play in the Rose Bowl. This experience was one of his happiest moments.

Joe was a devoted Catholic. His faith transcended his life. Funeral visitation will be held at Bosse Funeral Home, 1355 Ellison Avenue, Louisville KY, 40204 on Thursday, October 2, from 4:00 PM-8:00 PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church, 2911 Pindell Avenue, Louisville KY 40217, at 10 AM on Friday, October 3.
