Eugene Englert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home - St. Matthews on Jan. 10, 2026.
Eugene Raphael Englert Jr. 77, passed peacefully on Wednesday, December 31st, 2025. He is remembered as one of the strongest and most grateful people, with a cheeky sense of humor. He appreciated time with his loved ones more than anything - no matter how short or long a visit. He never missed a chance to genuinely let people know how much he loved them.
Gene was born on May 14th, 1948, in Louisville, KY to Eugene R. Englert Sr. and Sally F. Englert. He attended St. Rita School, graduated from St. Xavier High School, and continued his studies at Brescia University and St. Meinrad Seminary. He proudly and honorably enlisted as a Navy Seabee and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War (between 1969-1974).
Gene was married and was blessed with 4 children. He was a master machinist with L&N/CSX Railroad where his love and expertise of mechanics and trains, came together. He later moved to Corbin, KY with the railroad, where he retired after almost 30 years. Gene loved the small town where he resided for more than 25 years, and was a friend to everyone he met. He enjoyed sitting on his front porch talking to neighbors and passersby, forging friendships wherever he went. He was always making people laugh and had multiple projects in progress at any given time. Gene was a hard worker, innovator, and an automotive expert.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Sally Englert, brothers Joe Baby Englert, and Mark Englert, and sister Kathy Lee. He is survived by his children, Eugene Englert III (Leslie), Carmel Alves (Matthew), Emily Clark (Michael), and Timothy Englert; his siblings, Richard Englert (Connie), Chris Englert (Michele), and Sally Suppiger (Gary); and his 10 cherished grandchildren who always brought him great joy: Aubrie, Tommy, and Max Englert; Preston, Salem, and Weldon Alves; Matson, Logan, Tenley, and Townsend Clark.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17th, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., followed by a service at 12:00 p.m., at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, Louisville, KY 40207. A private burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 5404 Hwy 54, Owensboro, KY 42303. He will be laid to rest alongside his parents and brother, Mark Englert.
Gene's big hugs, keen sense of humor, endless stories, and love for family and community, will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
