Francis Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home - Bardstown on Feb. 9, 2026.
Francis Donald "Don" Smith, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, was born in 1934 and passed peacefully into eternal life.

Don attended Holy Spirit Grade School, St. Xavier High School, Bellarmine University; and proudly served his country in the Air National Guard. He was a faithful member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish for 65 years, where his quiet devotion and steady presence reflected the depth of his faith.

In 1955, Don married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Russell. Their marriage was a lifelong love story marked by devotion, partnership, and deep family roots. They remained in loving union until Sarah's death in 2025, and are now reunited in their heavenly home.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Sarah Russell Smith; father, Francis Davin Smith; mother, Marguerite Donnelly Smith; and brothers, Bobby Smith and Jimmy Smith.

He was a devoted father to Kenneth Smith (Anne), the late, Timothy Michael Smith, Diane Sturtzel (Mark), Andrew Smith (Camille), Mary Smith, and Michael Smith.

He was a proud grandfather to Ian Smith (Violet), Nathan Sturtzel (Kailey), Amy Sturtzel Hemming (Nick), Alex Smith, Averi Smith, and Dane Smith, and a joyful great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren, with another expected any day.

Don built his career as a freight salesman in the transportation industry, where he was known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and gift for building lasting relationships.

A gifted woodworker, Don crafted clocks and furniture for friends and family-each piece a lasting expression of his patience, skill, and generosity.

Don will be remembered for his steadfast love of family, quiet strength, and the enduring legacy he leaves through the generations who carry his spirit forward.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 p.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 508 Breckenridge Lane. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Thursday at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home 3800 Bardstown Road. A private entombment will be held at a later date.

Memorial gifts may be made to Alzheimer's Association.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of another classmate and old friend Don, St. X class of 1952. My wife and I enjoyed many Derby parties with Don and Sarah at their home. My sympathy for your loss.
