Rev. Dennis Leo Sefcik, age 86, of Pocahontas, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.
Dennis Leo Sefcik was born January 7, 1937 on a farm near Rolfe. He was the son of Adolph and Agnes (Bunda) Sefcik. His family moved to the family farm S.W. of Pocahontas in March of 1940: the same place he later retired. He received his grade and high school education at Sacred Heart School, graduating in a class of 21 in May of 1954.
He then attended ISU where he was involved in ROTC and was awarded the status of "marksman." He then enrolled in Loras College in September 1957 and graduated in 1961 with a double major and several minors. He then entered Mt. Saint Bernard Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. He was ordained by Bishop Joseph M. Mueller, D.D. on June 5, 1965. During the summers and after ordination, he studied Administration and Counseling at Creighton University receiving his Masters degree in administration and Certification in Counseling. His many assignments included OLGC - Fonda, Assistant Dean of Men at Heelan High School, Principal at St. Bernard's in Breda and faculty at Garrigan High School. His parish assignments included: Fonda, Breda, St. Benedict, Merrill, Remsen, Laurens, Lohrville, Lake City and concluded as Chaplain to the men at NCCF at Rockwell City. He served one term on the audit committee of the boys IHSAA.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, C.O.F. and Catholic Workman. He retired to the family farm in July of 2007 and enjoyed land management and restoring Farmall tractors. His many hobbies included airplane flying, fishing, golf, coin collecting, playing cards, tractor rides and visiting with people.
Surviving are his sisters, Mary Ann Nieland of Carroll, and Sally Ann Douglas of Omaha and a brother, Adolph Jr of Council Bluffs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Agnes Sefcik; a brother, Albert and his wife, Theresa; brother-in-law, Roger Nieland, and sister-in-law, Ann Sefcik.
