A proud graduate of Richwoods High School and Bradley University, Dennis's commitment to education laid the foundation for a life full of achievement and service. After completing his education, Dennis honorably served his country as a U.S. Army Veteran, a period that instilled in him the values of discipline and patriotism. His leadership skills were further exemplified when he became president of DW Witter Inc. Construction in Camp Grove from 1972 until 1988.
His entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when he established Westlake Rare Coins in Peoria in 1988. Under his visionary leadership, the business flourished, becoming a cherished cornerstone of the community. In a touching gesture, he welcomed his oldest grandson, Pierce, into the fascinating world of coin collecting, passing on not just a legacy, but a passion.
Dennis's love for aviation was as boundless as the skies he navigated with his private pilot's certificate. His passion for flying was more than just a hobby; it was a testament to his adventurous spirit and desire to embrace the freedom of the open air, often flying to his construction sites in his Cessna, which combined his professional and personal interests seamlessly.
Music was another of Dennis's great loves. An avid guitarist, he shared his talent and knowledge by teaching guitar at Matthews Music in Peoria in the mid-1960s. His musical abilities were just one of the many ways he connected with those around him.
Dennis's commitment to the community was evident through his active membership in the American Legion Post 445 in Bradford, IL. His dedication to service and camaraderie was a hallmark of his character. As a life member of several numismatic societies, including the American Numismatic Association, Illinois Numismatic Association, Central States Numismatic Society, and the Civil War Token Society, Dennis was deeply engaged in the preservation and appreciation of currency history.
His involvement with the Center Battlefield Historical & Museum Society further showcased his love for history and his commitment to preserving the past for future generations. He devoted countless hours to wandering the hallowed fields of Gettysburg, soaking in the rich history and the poignant echoes of the past. Dennis's enthusiasm for life was most vividly displayed in his attendance at 52 consecutive Indy 500 races, a tradition he shared with friends and family, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Dennis brought joy to those around him, always armed with a sharp joke to elevate the atmosphere or a captivating anecdote to engage his listeners.
Dennis's love for shopping was well-known, with weekly trips to Sam's Club and Costco being a staple in his routine. These outings were never just about the purchases but about the experience and the people he would meet. He was a familiar face among the aisles, often engaging in friendly banter with fellow shoppers and staff, leaving a trail of smiles wherever he went.
Above all, Dennis was a devoted family man. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and was always there to support them.
