Diane was born in Detroit, Michigan to parents Joseph and Catherine Simonelli. She was the youngest of five, and they brought her home to Helene Street in South Royal Oak where she lived the entirety of her life as she and her husband eventually purchased the home from her parents upon marriage. Diane was very proud of her Italian heritage and loved her family well. She married Keith Averill on April 19, 1974 and remained his wife for 51 years until her death.
Diane was an avid crafter, making intricately beaded ornaments for her loved ones throughout the year and crocheting whenever she could. She was a lover of fashion and a master seamstress. Among her favorite creations were her own wedding gown and a prom and wedding gown for her best friend's daughter and "next door niece", Rhonda.
Diane worked at Fidelity Bank for over 30 years in various positions, including IT, eventually becoming an officer. She enjoyed the challenges her position offered her and the travel it allowed.
Diane enjoyed Formula One racing and was found at various tracks on any given weekend. When she couldn't attend in person, a race was surely on her TV. She managed to visit 49 states, missing only Idaho.
She repeatedly visited Texas Hill Country and her niece and family there- she felt at home in the Lone Star State.
Diane is missed dearly already and survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, Keith Averill of Royal Oak, Sister, Geri (Peter) Stelljes of Queen Creek, AZ; Cousin Mark (Bonnie) Johnson; Nieces and Nephews Eric, Laura, and Gregory, Sam and Melanie Iannamico; Kristen and Bryan Winfield and their children Tate, Olive and Beckham whom "Aunt Dee" adored.
Diane will be missed by so many family, friends, and neighbors- especially for her caring nature, her brilliant, detailed memory, and her spitfire personality.
A Visitation for Diane will be held on Monday, June 23, 2025, 3pm-8pm, at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1386 N. Crooks Rd., Clawson, 48017. A Service will be held the following day, Tuesday, June 24th,11am at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home. Friends may begin visiting at 10am. A Luncheon is to follow.
