New Castle, NH - Dixie Lee Pappas of New Castle, NH and a long-time winter resident of Naples, FL passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 92. Dixie's outgoing personality touched many and she will long be remembered for vibrant personality.
Dixie was the youngest daughter of Frank and Calliope (Polychronopoulos) Soukaras. She was predeceased by her siblings Tula Gegas and Pauline Soukaras. Her survivors include Dr. John F. Pappas, MD of Biloxi, MS (and his wife Dr. Joann (Orphanos) Pappas, and Dr. James M. Pappas of Tulsa, OK (and his wife, Dr. Karen (Flaherty) Pappas). Dixie had six grandchildren Luke, Téa, Sofia, George, Elizabeth and Hannah.
Dixie was a first generation Greek-American, born and raised in Dover, NH. She was baptized and remained in faith with the Greek Orthodox Church her entire life.
Dixie graduated from Dover High School in 1952. She was a cheerleader and a starting guard on the girls' basketball team. She then attended the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene and was a hygienist with Dr. George Patten for three decades. She met Milton Pappas - the love of her life - at the Skyline Ballroom and the two were inseparable for 63 years of marriage. She expertly managed and built the Pappco Realty Corporation.
Dixie was the kind of person everyone seemed to know - she was outgoing, endlessly social and always the spark to gatherings. She maintained friendships from every chapter of life - Naples, New Hampshire, golf clubs, bridge groups Her zest for life as well as her humor and wit, made her the heart of every conversation. Her laughter could fill up a room. She remained young at heart throughout her wonderful life and was grateful to all of her friends and caregivers who worked tirelessly to make her final months more pleasurable.
Dixie also was a wizard in the kitchen and a talented artist. She was an excellent golfer and terrific at entertaining friends and family. She was born during the depression but also conquered the Internet in real time. She lived a great life and we will miss her so much. May her memory be eternal.
SERVICES – A time of Visitation will be held on Monday Nov. 24, 2025 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, NH. Her Funeral Service will be held on Tues. Nov. 25, 2025 at 11:00 am at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 40 Andrew Jarvis Dr., Portsmouth. Interment to follow at Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth. In Lieu of Flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
