Dolores Berglund, age 95, of
Chesterton, Indiana, left this world peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Dolores's life was a testament to grace, strength, and unwavering love.
Dolores was born on April 19, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to Harry and Helen (Novak) Schaffer. She grew up in the vibrant neighborhoods of Chicago and graduated from South Shore High School in 1948. She pursued secretarial school after graduation, setting the stage for a life marked by service, dedication, and care for others.
On October 25, 1952, Dolores married the love of her life, Norman Berglund. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared 46 cherished years of marriage until Norman's passing in 1999. Their love was enduring and filled with mutual respect, laughter, and the joy of raising their four children.
Dolores's heart was never confined to her immediate family-though they were always her proudest joy. She was a devoted mother to Linda (Rodney) Mruk, Christine Berglund, Fred (Kathleen) Berglund, and DJ (Ernesto) Sanchez, and a loving grandmother to thirteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored deeply and supported unconditionally.
A woman of strong faith and community spirit, Dolores was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Chesterton. She found great fulfillment in serving others, especially through her long-standing involvement with Ingalls Memorial Hospital, where she served as an Auxiliary Board Member from 1980 to 2000, including two terms as President. Her compassion, leadership, and sense of duty left a lasting impact.
Dolores had a remarkable way of making people feel seen and valued. She was often described as beautiful, kind, funny, graceful, and deeply thoughtful. Her warmth radiated in every room she entered, and her generosity of spirit was felt by all who knew her. She cherished time spent with friends and family, always staying socially connected and engaged in the lives of those she loved.
She is survived by her three children; thirteen grandchildren, Michael Mruk, Daniel (Katy) Mruk, Kimberly Mruk, Allison Mruk, Amanda Mruk, Stephanie Berglund, Jeff (Alisha) Berglund, Kevin Berglund, Madeline Stelzer, Audrey (Matt) Estill, Erica (Thomas) Haas, Alexander (Sarah) Sanchez, and Tony Sanchez; twelve great-grandchildren; brother, Harry (Sharon) Schaffer; niece, Doris Lander; nephews, John (Mimi) Munson, Bill (Margie) Munson, and Christopher (Christine) Schaffer; and many dear cousins.
She now joins in eternal rest her beloved husband, Norman; daughter, Christine; parents; sister, Rose Marie Munson; son-in-law, Rodney Mruk; and nephew-in-law, Roland Lander.
Dolores's life was one well-lived-a shining example of love in action. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched with her kindness and unwavering devotion. Though our hearts ache with her absence, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit continues in every act of love and grace she inspired.
A private mass for the family will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
