Dolores Bell Shields, aged 92, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024, in the presence of her loving family. Dolores was born on August 27, 1931 in
Detroit, Michigan to the late Everett J. and Florence B. Kimball née Buchanan.
Dolores is survived by her three sons: Dr. Charles P. Shields, III (Rebecca), John A. Shields, and Jim A. Shields; two grandchildren Andrew and Davis; brother John Kimball, and a lifetime worth of treasured friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Charles P. Shields, Jr. and her special son Scott.
As a young woman, Dolores worked for the telephone company in Detroit and then later in
Washington, D.C. along with her best friend Lois, Dolores discovered a love of travel. The duo's shared adventures and innocent hijinks made for great stories years later. Love came next after Dolores was introduced to Charles, an army friend of her brother. Marriage and children followed. Dolores raised four boys, including a developmentally disabled child. She loved her boys unconditionally and supported them wholeheartedly. She was selfless in her devotion to family. Her not-so-secret wish for a daughter was fulfilled when her daughter-in-law Rebecca joined the family. The two "girls" spent many a happy time together visiting
Williamsburg, Virginia.
Dolores also experienced grief after losing her husband Charles and later her son Scott. During her extended widowhood, she lived a simple life. However, she was able to remain in her own home as the family was committed to caring for her in the same way she cared for them. She enjoyed reading the daily newspaper. She enjoyed watching television in the evening (and was partial to sporting events, "Jeopardy," "Green Acres," "HGTV", classic movies, and old westerns).
Dolores' faith was admirable and unwavering. She was a long -time member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and found great fulfillment in years of service for the King's Daughters Lund Loni Circle. Even when unable to attend service in-person due to medical issues in her later years, she remained invested in the life of the church and stayed in contact with the many friends she made there.
Dolores also enjoyed time spent as a co-advisor for a girls 4-H club with her good friend Louise.
With advanced age came medical illness, but Dolores was blessed to have excellent medical care. The family would like to publicly thank the following caregivers: Dr. Monheim, Dr. Tan, Dr. Jan, and all the staff at Medina Hospital (2 North), Lodi Rehabilitation, and Western Reserve Medina County Hospice.
Dolores was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a kind and gentle soul. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
The family will hold a private service and Dolores will be laid to rest with her husband Charles and her son Scott at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
