Don Hennessy, age 65, of West Bloomfield died peacefully at home surrounded by family after a courageous 16-month battle with Glioblastoma Brain Cancer.
Born to Leo and Pat Hennessy on October 21, 1959, Don was the youngest of five siblings growing up. Don met the love of his life, Laura Kay Darnell, in seventh grade. They married on June 16, 1979. Together, they raised three boys, Don Jr., Jason and Dustin. Following in the footsteps of their parents and inheriting Don's work ethic, their boys all went on to become public servants as police officers and firefighters. Don never stopped talking about how proud he was of the men his boys grew into.
His family always joked that Don would work for the rest of his life because he truly enjoyed it all, and he did just that. Don started his career as a firefighter for Walled Lake in 1994. From 1994 to 2025, he served a total of 28 years.
Don had another career serving as a tool maker for several years before becoming a machinist for the remainder of his career. In addition to his firefighting and machinist careers, Don was also a real estate agent for Southeast Michigan. Knowing Don and his love for dancing, he would step in as a DJ for many events, giving a chance to showcase his dance moves. He was a man of many talents and one of the hardest working people you will ever meet.
Aside from spending time with family and friends, Don loved camping, boating, Schuss Mountain Ski Patrol, softball, and riding his motorcycle. Of his many hobbies and talents, serving his community as a firefighter was his passion.
Don was not a religious man, nor a spiritual man, but by all rights, he was a good man the absolute best.
He was preceded in death by both parents, his brother Michael, Father-in-Law John, and Mother-in-Law, Jean. Don is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Laura, sons Don Jr. (Phoebe), Jason (Jaclyn) and Dustin (Chelsea), grandsons Patrick, Gavin and Carson, and sisters Kelly, Cathy and Debbie.
A Memorial Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 340 North Pontiac Trail Walled Lake (3 Blocks South of Maple Rd.) Saturday at 1 PM. Friends may visit Saturday 11 AM until time of service.
In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to Michigan Medicine Trauma Burn Center

This is a terrible loss.
My heart goes out to Laura & his awesome family.
I worked with Don for many years @ WLFD. He was a great fireman and always made us laugh.
God Speed.
