Donald James Gareis

Donald (Don) James Gareis, 92, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024, at home with his family by his side. He was born on November 19, 1931, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota to Henry and Louise Gareis. Don was the third child of six.
He moved with his family to Marin County, California when he was almost 12 years old. He graduated from Tamalpias High School in 1949.
Don started his career as a printer while in high school, working on the yearbooks. He was hired in 1948 at Sausalito News as a typesetter. His final job was as a lithographer at his brother Dennis' print shop. He worked as a printer for over 45 years.
Don was very active with folk dancing at Changs International Folk Dancing in San Francisco. They joined the Dance Guild where they specialized in Eastern European dances and performed for over 10 years. It was there where he met the love of his life, Genevieve (Genny) Mullen. They married in 1955 and were happily married for over 69 years.
Don loved camping with his family, fishing and volunteering for all of his children's sports. He loved gardening, walking and traveling.
Don was an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus St. Bonaventure's Council 6038 and Todos Santos Assembly 2286 as a Fourth Degree Knight.
He is survived by his wife, Genny; sons, Tim and Ron; daughters, Sherry, Kelly (George), Kim (Scott); grandchildren Daniel, Ryan, Adam, Bridget and Briana; and great-grandchildren, Elijah, Riley and Zoey. Don adored his family above all else.
He is also survived by two remaining loving sisters, Barbara and Dacia.
Services will be held at Queen of Heaven Cemetery and Funeral Center in the St. Cecilia Chapel, 1965 Reliez Valley Rd. Lafayette, Ca 94549 on October 26, 2024. 10:30 am for visitation, 11 am for liturgy, and reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Bonaventure Food Pantry. Checks can be made out to St. Bonaventure with a note for Food Pantry in memory of Don Gareis.
