Don was born June 18, 1933 in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the son of Cecil and Mabel Mortimer. December 28, 1968 was the day Don became Donna Mortimers husband and the father of Linda (Michael) Murray and Richard (Donna) Harrington.
After his graduation from Port Huron High School in 1951; Don enrolled at Port Huron Junior College where he graduated in 1953. After school He enrolled in the U.S Army from 1954 to 1956.
Don spent several year designing bridges as a structural engineer at the F. Yeager Bridge Company. He then spent 17 years as a business partner, contractor and carpenter with L&M Builders. Don retired in June, 1995. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary kept Don busy through much of his retirement. He served as Flotilla Commander, Vice Commander and Division Captain for several year. For over 20 years he was busy, teaching classes, attending meetings and doing boat inspections. Don was a firm believer in boating safety and education. He spent many, many hours teaching Boater Safety classes for the Auxiliary and The Port Huron Power Squadron. Don and Donna were avid boaters and spent many, many hours on Michigan lakes and rivers. When they were not on the water or doing Auxiliary things, he enjoyed dinners with his family. Sunday dinners with the Grandkids were always a special time for him.
He is survived by his wife Donna Mortimer, son; Richard (Donna) Harrington and his daughter; Linda (Michael) Murray of Corunna, Ontario; as well as two Grandchildren; Grant (Liz) Murray of Cochrane Alberta and Keith (Stephani) Murray of Corunna, Ontario. He also was a proud Great Grandfather of Abie, Braden, Emilia and Connor.
Don is preceded in death by his Parents Cecil and Mabel Mortimer.
He was loved by many and he will be missed.
Graveside services will take place on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 11:00am at Woodland Cemetery, Port Huron Township. Pastor Scott Magneson will officiate.
Memorials contributions can be made to the Blue Water Humane Society or McLaren Hospice.
