Donna Coomes passed away peacefully at home on June 13, 2023, after a long illness. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Donna was born to George and Lorraine (Soucy) Simard on August 5, 1945, in Biddeford. She attended St. Mary's grade school, graduating in 1959. She moved on to attend St. Joseph's High School, graduating in 1963. She went to work at Bruce Shoe Co. in Biddeford. On February 10, 1968, she married Michael Coomes at St. Matthew's Church in Limerick. She continued working until her son was born in 1972. She then decided to stay home. When her son started school, she went back to work in 1986 for Catholic Charities as the Business Manager for St. Louis Child Care, where she worked for 26 years.
Donna was a member of the St. Mary's Parish, where she was President of Parish Sodality. After the closing of St. Mary's Church, she joined the Family Life Committee and the Social Justice Peace Committee.
Donna loved gardening, feeding the birds, and traveling. She traveled to 46 States including Alaska and Hawaii, Italy, Australia, and the Holy Land.
Besides her husband of 55 years, Michael, she leaves behind her son James Coomes and his wife Kristina; her brother in-law Doug Coomes; her sister Sharon Ballenger; niece Tracy Ballenger; nephew Troy Ballenger; and great nieces Samantha and Sara Ballenger. She was predeceased by her parents George and Lorraine Simard.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St, Biddeford, ME 04005. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Biddeford on Friday, June 16, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Committal will be private.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Biddeford Food Pantry or the Michael T. Goulet Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation.
