Donna Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Tippecanoe Funeral & Cremation Services on Dec. 9, 2025.
Donna J. Smith, 80, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025. She was born in Lafayette on August 27, 1945, to the late Mary and Jacob Schelle. A proud 1963 graduate of Klondike High School, Donna grew into the kind, hardworking, and spirited woman her family and friends will forever remember.

On January 16, 1965, Donna married the love of her life, Richard A. Smith, who preceded her in death. Together they built a life full of laughter, family, and devotion. Donna was also preceded in death by two of her children, Kelly Smith and Todd Smith, losses she carried with immeasurable strength and grace.

Donna is survived by her daughter Shelly Smith, five grandchildren-Megan (Sam) Harshbarger, Jared (Elle) Ryker, Hunter (Kaylee) Smith, Brody Smith, and Theresa Smith-and eight great-grandchildren who lit up her world: Wyatt and Rylin Harshbarger; Aubree, Peyton, and Brightyn Ryker; and Jupiter, Brenlie, and Beckett Smith. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she spoke of them with endless love.

She is also survived by her beloved friend whom she lovingly called a son, Tommy Mangan, and his wife Angie Mangan, who were devoted caregivers and companions to Donna over the past several years. Their friendship, support, and love brought her comfort and joy, and Donna cherished them deeply.

Donna worked hard all her life, but she loved even harder. She drove a school bus for 30 years, served as a teacher's aide, worked at the Crawfordsville Sheriff's Department, and ran her own wallpaper and painting business. During school breaks she could be found working as a janitor, and she loved sharing stories about detasseling corn during her youth-one of her favorite memories to tell.

She was proud to be a member of the Elks Lodge, the Eagles, and the American Legion. Donna had a zest for life that was impossible to miss. She loved Florida and lived happily as a snowbird. She enjoyed fishing, camping, puzzles, working in her yard, and joking with anyone who crossed her path. Her sense of humor, paired with her warm heart, made her a joy to be around.

Donna also adored her loyal dogs, Teddy and Bear, who brought her great comfort and companionship.

In her final years, Donna was blessed with the devoted care and friendship of her sister-in-law, Joyce Smith-Miller. Donna absolutely loved Joyce-especially giving her a hard time-and Joyce's dedication meant the world to her and the entire family.

Donna loved deeply, worked tirelessly, and gave generously. Her legacy is one of strength, humor, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. She will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever with love.
