POLKTON - Mr. Donnie Ray Hammond, 74, was born on June 26, 1949 in Union County and was a son of the late Madison and Solon Parker Hammond. On Saturday, October 7, 2023, he departed his earthly life at McWhorter Hospice House in Monroe, NC.
Donnie graduate from East Union High School in 1967 and two years later was drafted into the United States Army, serving from 1969 until 1970, to include a tour of duty during the Vietnam War.
Donnie returned from war and went on to become a truck driver, having last worked with Williams Ready Mix, from where he retired.
He a passionate fisherman, enjoyed working on machinery and most of all spending quality time with his loved ones.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Anthony A. Hammond and his three brothers, Coy Hamond, Herman Hammond and Steve Hammond.
He leaves to cherish his memories; his wife of 52 years, Valeria M. Hammond; his son, Kelly D. Hammond and his daughter, LeeAnn Dickens; his sisters, Martha Burns (Billy), Dorothy Kiser (Columbus) and Rose Howard; his brothers, J.B. Parker (Lillie) and James Hammond (Mary); his sisters-in-law, Maggie Hammond, Hazel Hammond, Girtha Little and Carolyn Taylor; 18 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, October 12, 2023 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro. Interment with military honors will follow in Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Polkton.
Public viewing will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Leavitt Funeral Home.
The family is gathering at the home on Wightman Church Road in the Burnsville Community of Polkton.
