Our dear Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great-Great Grandmother, Dora Amalia Abila, born on December 20, 1924, sadly passed away on September 29, 2023 at the age of 98. Dora passed away at home with family by her side. She was a wonderful mother who was always there for her nine children. While raising her children, Dora spent her time baking fresh bread, pies, cakes, doughnuts and cookies, canning fresh fruits and vegetables, and homemade jams and jellies. She also made farm fresh butter, cream, homemade soaps and milk to sell to assist with raising such a large family. She treated her family for the majority of her life with freshly made tortillas and three hot meals daily. In her free time you would find Dora embroidering, making quilts, reading, doing crossword puzzles, as well as her evening ritual of watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Dora was preceded in death by her Husband, Sergio C. Abila, Parents Joe and Manuelita Cordova, Son Roger Valdez, Granddaughter Kenna Rodriguez, Brothers Joe, Fermin and Elmer Cordova, Sister Susie Martinez, former Son-in-law, Matthew Ciarlo and Daughter-in-law Millie Valdez.
As the Matriarch of the Abila family, she is survived by Daughters, Denise Abila, Bernadette (Dave) Lauck, Sylvia (Brion) Stephen, Joyce (Jim) Hacsi, and Pauline (Manuel) Sanchez, Sons Ivan Abila, Gary (Vonnie) Valdez and Sergio P. (Kristi) Abila, 29 Grandchildren, 44 Great-grandchildren and 4 Great-Great grandchildren, Sister Evelyn Cordova and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dora was wholeheartedly taken care of by her daughter, Denise for the last eight years. Dora was loved by her entire family and will be forever missed.
Open services will be held October 13, 2023 at Boies-Ortega Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m., 115 E. 5th Street Walsenburg, Co. Burial will follow at the Chama Cemetery with a reception at the Gardner Community Center.
