Doris Virginia Howard, 88, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on September 20, 2025, at the Brickyard Healthcare Center in Elkhart.

Born on January 7, 1937, in Marion, Indiana County, Doris was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Alma M. (Deen) Courtney. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Melvin Howard, as well as her brothers and sisters-in-law: Albert (Norma) Courtney, Delbert (Millie) Courtney, and Kenneth (Barbara) Courtney.

A graduate of Somerset High School, Doris worked for The Associates earlier in her life. On January 14, 1967, she married the love of her life, Melvin Howard, in South Bend, Indiana. Together they built a life rooted in faith, family, and simple joys.

Doris was a devout and faithful member of the Jehovah's Witnesses and attended the Kingdom Hall in Mishawaka. Her faith was central to her life and remained a guiding light through all her years. She was also a passionate animal lover and especially adored her Schnauzer-Poodle mixes. Camping and spending time in nature brought her great joy.

She is lovingly remembered by her five children: Tony Landis (Terry) of Elkhart, IN; Ronald Gember of St. Petersburg, FL; Marcia Yrineo of South Bend, IN; Larry Howard of High Point, NC; and Sandy Howard, wife of the late Kelly Howard, of Hays, NC. Doris leaves behind a cherished legacy through her 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Per Doris's wishes, no services will be held.

Her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace and reunited with her loved ones. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her unwavering faith, gentle spirit, and the love she gave so freely.
