Doris Hughes

Sunrise: June 18, 1933 – Sunset: January 24, 2026

Who can find a virtuous woman? Her value is far above rubies, and Doris Hughes exemplifies this virtue. Doris graced this world on June 18, 1933, in Grenada Mississippi, to James and Maude Alice Conley, she is the seventh of 10 children. She passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026. Up until the end, Doris maintained her kindness, grace, compassion, appreciation of beauty, love of family and friends and expressed gratitude for her long life, full of wonderful and varied experiences. She was truly a wonderful woman of God.

Doris moved to Michigan at an early age, married Wilford Hughes Sr. on April 19th, 1952, and God blessed this union with 8 beautiful children whom Doris loved and adored. Doris loved the Lord; she attended New Birth MB where her spiritual life flourished as a dedicated servant. She unselfishly served her church with unending love and commitment in various ministerial capacities; she found joy teaching Sunday School.

Known for her green thumb and her ability to turn any patch of dirt into a blooming paradise, Doris spent her life nurturing both her plants and her family. Her garden was a sanctuary for many, often featuring her favorite flowers, e.g. peonies, roses, the list goes on and on.

Doris had a long and productive career, working various jobs, always with joy and unwavering dedication. Doris was known for being an excellent cook. She delighted in preparing tasty food to share with her family and friends. She could be counted on to cook something amazing and delicious because it was always prepared not only with her vast skills, but also with boundless love. It was always a treat to sit at Doris tables.

She was known for her wit, her smile, and encouraging words, her home and her heart was always open to all the children in the neighborhood. Earning her universal affection. Her love was unconditional, her loving discipline and her way of making everyone feel like they were at the center of her heart. Doris had a special gift of caring, listening and offering words of wisdom.

She was and always will remain bigger than life. The virtuous woman was there for each of her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She was and will always remain the rock of our foundation as a family. She is the person by whom we all measure our parenting skills.

We all feel blessed to have known her, blessed to have been her child, grandchild, great-grandchild, a neighbor or a friend.

Indeed, we found a virtuous woman in our beloved Doris, whose love and spirit will remain with us forever.

Doris leaves to cherish her memory and mourn her passing, Children: Moya Hughes of Louisville KY, Dorothy (Willie) Williams of Lake Orion, MI, Carmen (Du Wayne) Smith of Ecorse, MI, Kathy (Collins) Anderson of Pontiac, MI, Karen (Paul) Buford of Waterford MI, Mitchell Hughes of Queen Creek, AZ, Kevin (Maria) Hughes of Queen Creek, AZ. Two sisters, Helen Pearson of Detroit, MI and Bernice Conley of Southfield, MI, 16 Grandchildren, 37 Great-Grandchildren, Special son/nephew Morris Pat Conley. And a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Doris was proceeded in death by her parents James and Maude Alice Conley, husband Wilford Hughes Sr., her son Wilford Hughes Jr., and seven siblings: Jimmy Willis, Britton Conley, Cluffie Conley, Otha Hopkins, James Conley, Havis Conley and Eddie Conley.

We deeply appreciate our sister Moya and Wynonia for giving Mom everything she needed to feel safe and loved until her last breath. You did an amazing job. Because of you, Mom was able to remain in her home and not in a facility. We know it wasn't easy, and for that, we are forever grateful.

"For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing."

II Timothy 4:6–8

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, 351 Prospect Street, Pontiac, MI 48341.
