Doris Ann Kinkade Philpot, age 88, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023 in Homer, Louisiana. She was born on December 29, 1934 to Bill Elza Kinkade and Grace Emily Koepke Kinkade at Deer Trail, Colorado. In 1952, the family moved to Mena, Arkansas where she met and married her husband of nearly 70 years, W. Nelson Philpot.
Doris and Nelson were married on May 7, 1954 at Cherry Hill, Arkansas. She was a dedicated wife and mother and together they raised one son, Michael, and two daughters, Marcia and Valerie. They made their homes in Stillwater, Oklahoma and Homer, Louisiana.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Homer for more than 60 years where she served as Sunday School teacher, Training Union teacher, Director of Vacation Bible School, Girl’s Auxiliary, and on numerous church committees.
Doris worked as a telephone operator during her early marriage and later as a bookkeeper and with personnel matters at the Homer National Bank. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, travel, and doing anything she could for her family, especially creating a warm and inviting home.
Her priorities in life were God and family. Her greatest accomplishments were being a loyal, steadfast wife and a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was predeceased by both parents and two brothers, Jack and Jim Kinkade of Mena, Arkansas.
She is survived by her husband, Nelson, son Michael Philpot and wife Linda of Montgomery, Texas; daughter Marcia Jordan and husband Gary of Double Oak, Texas; and daughter Valerie Tuggle and husband Jimmy of Homer. She leaves five grandchildren who lovingly called her Grandmama, Robert Wideman of Frisco, Texas; Jon David Philpot and wife Jasmine of Houston, Texas; Emily Philpot of Houston, Texas; Jason Tuggle and wife Caleh of El Dorado, Arkansas; and Taylor Tuggle and wife Jessica of Fort Worth, Texas. She is also survived by six great grandchildren including Brody, Chance and Tanner Wideman of Frisco, Texas, and Kensington, Annalise, and Stetson Tuggle of El Dorado, Arkansas….and another great grandchild on the way!
Additionally, Doris is survived by two sisters-in-law, Odessa Philpot Dann and husband Robert of Rockville, Maryland, and Nancy Philpot of Mena, Arkansas. She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends all over the world. Her first BFF (best furry friend), Laci, predeceased her, and her current BFF, Mini, was her faithful companion to the end.
A celebration of life was held at First Baptist Church of Homer, Louisiana at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 29, which would have been her 89th birthday. The family received visitors in the church auditorium which begun at 10:00 a.m.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the tender care provided by the doctors and nurses of Claiborne Memorial Medical Center, and particularly that of Dr. Scott Haynes, whom Doris adored for his gentle and compassionate attention. There were many times when Doris would feel overcome with worry and fear that could be diminished only by visiting with “Dr. Scott.”
Pallbearers were grandsons Robert Wideman, Jon David Philpot, Jason Tuggle, and Taylor Tuggle plus nephews Brent Kinkade, Tim Kinkade, Scott Kinkade, and Phil Kinkade .
Burial was at Arlington Cemetery, Homer, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the “I Love My Church Fund” at First Baptist Church, 406 West Main Street, Homer, Louisiana 71040. Services were under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home of Homer.
