Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ware Funeral Home on Nov. 20, 2024.
Doris Shanks has moved on to Glory!!!
We are so thankful to have had her as our Mom all these years!
Thankful to have had a mom that not only taught us about the Lord, but lived her life for Him. She shared her stories of growth in the Lord, learning to hear God's voice & about walking in obedience with the people God placed in her path.
Mom was Never afraid of hard work, and taught her children to work hard and to do a good job.
She was also a feeder of the hungry- whether in body or spirit.
Among other gifts, Mom had the gift of Hospitality and the gift of Helps and she was good at using those gifts (and teaching her children & husband to also be giving individuals to others!)
She was not afraid to say she was sorry if she felt she had offended someone.
She liked to laugh and sing. And She taught us many unique songs as we were growing up!
She was an avid reader and was the Extension Librarian at Huntington for over 10 years. She worked retail many years at The Brass Bell and The Store in Chillicothe. She was a volunteer at the hospital Gift Shop.
She was a friend and a mentor to numerous people in her lifetime, including her children. She babysat grandchildren and great grandchildren and became famous with them for Saturday Morning Pancakes and Chicken & Noodles & visits to Friendly's Restaurant!
She taught Sunday School, Jr Church, Vacation Bible School, she was a Deaconess, and was in numerous Bible Studies and Prayer Groups.
Mom was a caregiver to friends and family in need-often taking people into her home or driving others to Dr. appts or mental health visits. She cared for her own mother with Alzheimer's for 5 years & then her husband as he battled a form of dementia.
Did I mention she kept a clean & neat house?!? And that she loved shoes and Thrift Stores?!?!
Did I mention that she made sure her children could take Art Lessons, Piano Lessons, Band Lessons, or could be in all kinds of Clubs, or that she took us to museums, Concerts, Ballet Performances, nice Restaurants, and made sure we could go to Church Camps?
She taught us about commitment. She kept sacred her marriage vows from 1949 until now-through both good times and hard times.
Choosing to be faithful and committed, both to her husband and ultimately to the Lord, is a choice that affects us now, but also affects the generations to come.
Mom was born in Ripley, Oklahoma to Guy Francis & Eleonora White on November 27, 1932.
She would tell you that the most important choice she ever made was in 1945 when at 13 she gave her heart to Christ.
That choice is affecting 5 generations at present!
All of her children and her grandchildren love God.and most of their children -that next generation- are God followers and are now bringing their children up to love the Lord.
Thank you Mom for the Legacy you have left for us!
May your 4 children- Bill Shanks, Jr. (Vicki), Jan Curtis (Tim), Denise Litter (Mark), Brice Shanks (Roxane), your 12 grandchildren, your 35 great grandchildren and your 12 great great grandchildren
always Honor your Legacy by how they choose to live their lives.
Many thanks to faithful Caregivers, friends, and Hospice.
