LOUISVILLE - Doris "Granny" Unthank passed away on May 18th, 2025, a week shy of her 100th birthday. Born on a farm in southern Jefferson County, Kentucky, Doris was one of three daughters, and two sons, born to Walter Kleinsteuber, a colorful World War I veteran, and Naomi Trautwein.
With her sisters she ran kind of wild during World War II, working in a bakery and later a savings and loan. In 1951 she married Dean Unthank, and between that year and 1961 they had four children, Phyllis, Ronald, Alan and Michael. She has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
After her children left home, Doris pursued a career in fast food, working for Burger Queen, Inc. until her retirement. Her home in St. Matthews was a notorious gathering place for her "brood", assembling every Friday evening for burgers and enjoying Doris' in-ground backyard swimming pool, which "Granny" never swam in. In her retirement she enjoyed playing cut-throat multi-deck card games with her children and grandchildren.
Doris was a lifelong member of Crossroads Christian Church, originally Bethel United Church of Christ.
Funeral service 4pm Sunday May 25, 2025 at Crossroads Christian Church 4004 Shelbyville Road. Visitation 1 - 4pm Saturday at Pearson's 149 Breckenridge Ln.
