Dorothy Caroline Sarto

Dorothy Caroline Sarto, 97, of Pompton Plains, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Philip and Mary Rollins. She graduated from New Utrecht High School and began her career with Young & Rubicam in New York City. On January 15, 1955, she married the love of her life, James Joseph Sarto, Jr., and together they moved to Pompton Plains, New Jersey, where they raised their three children.

Dorothy later pursued a new calling in nursing, earning her credentials and dedicating many years to caring for others at Chilton Hospital. She began her career there as a nurse and later worked in the Utilization Review Department before her retirement.

A devoted woman of faith, Dorothy was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, where she was active in parish life and a proud member of the Columbiettes. She also served her community as a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed singing in the choir and was a member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. She enjoyed traveling with her church group to different countries.

Dorothy is survived by her son, James Sarto, III. and his wife Karen; her daughter, Mary Anne Klemowski; her daughter Terry Gehrke and her husband, Scott; her grandchildren, David and his wife, Lisa, Steven, Christina, Frank and his wife, Tiffany, Tyler, Matthew, Grace and William; and her great-grandchildren, Aaron, Hannah, Evan and Nathan. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, James J Sarto, Jr.; her sister, Sr. Helen Ann Rollins; and her son in-law, Jim Klemowski.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, November 9th at Scanlan's: Where Life is Celebrated. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Monday, November 10th at Our Lady of Good Counsel RC Church, Pompton Plains. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
