Doug Honn Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 30, 2025.
James Douglas Honn, affectionately known as Doug to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, at the age of 73. He was born on March 21, 1952, in Mattoon, Illinois, to James B. Honn and Barbara (Bryant) Honn.

Doug married Sheila (Bee) Honn in 1974, and together they shared 50 years of love, laughter, and life. Her passing on July 29, 2024, left a space in his heart that could never be filled.

Doug dedicated many years of his career to the Ameren CIPS plant in Newton, Illinois. He was deeply committed to his community, serving for several years on the Effingham School Board. Doug was a passionate supporter of local athletics and rarely missed an Effingham High School boys' or girls' basketball game. He found great joy in caring for his many pets and spending time with them.

Though he is no longer with us, Doug's spirit and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his children: Steve (Anna) Honn, Jami (Gregg) Sparks, Lori (Jereme) Beals, and Brandon Honn; his grandchildren: Andrew Honn, Seth Honn, Tyler Sparks, Kaylee Sparks, Logan Beals, and Matthew Beals; and his great-grandsons: Makhi and Xavien Beals. He is also survived by his brothers, Jay (Cindy) Honn and Jeff (Sherri) Honn.

Doug was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025 at 10 am at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Effingham. No visitation will be held. The Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
