Edward Litkenhous Obituary

Dr. Edward Earl Litkenhous, Jr. "Ed", age 90, passed peacefully at home on August 13, 2025. He was born June 3, 1935, in Akron, Ohio to Edward Earl Litkenhous, Sr. and Lenore Ingwalson Litkenhous. He was raised in Nashville, Tennessee where he attended Montgomery Bell Academy. He then attended Vanderbilt University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering in 1957. He received his M.D. from Vanderbilt in 1961. He interned at the University of Virginia in internal medicine, followed by a residency in pathology at Vanderbilt University.

Ed married Caffey Smith in 1959. They raised their children, Edward and Anna, in Huntsville, Alabama. They found joy in family, friends, tennis, and church.

Following his residency at Vanderbilt, Ed established a career at Pathology Associates in Huntsville, Alabama, and helped build the practice into what it is today. He became President of the Madison County Medical Society and earned the role of Chief of Staff at Huntsville Hospital.

Ed was a loyal and faithful member of The Episcopal Church of The Nativity where he served as a Sunday School teacher and a Stephen Minister. He found purpose in serving his community and helping others.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Earl Litkenhous, Sr. and Lenore Ingwalson Litkenhous. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Caffey Smith Litkenhous; his brother, Linn Litkenhous (Sandy); his son, Edward Earl Litkenhous, III (Susanna); his daughter, Anna Merritt (Jimmy); grandchildren, Gus Merritt, Alston Cox (Rivver), Meg Yeackle (Josh); and four great-grandchildren, Beckett, Coburn, Finn, and Oliver.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity at 2 p.m. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation or the Episcopal Church of the Nativity.

Ed and I were roommates (along with Bob Buntin) in our senior year at Vanderbilt eons ago. By and large, it was a memorable year. Ed and Bob were diligent and successful chemical engineering students, and they lifted my GPA to a slightly more respectable level by their example. Ed was a gentle and interesting person who obviously was going to have an admirable medical career. The three of us shared many interests, including sports at a school that wasn't very good in sports. We attended all sorts of events on campus anyway. I like to think that we were close friends, even though I never saw either of them again after our graduation in 1957. Many years later, we three got reconnected via e-mail and occasional phone calls over a period of 15-20 years. We talked about getting together, but it never happened. Bob died several years ago, and now I am the sole survivor from that cramped frat house bedroom that we shared. I will miss our communications, which had become a surprising and pleasant bonus late in life. As Archie and Edith might have said (sung), "Those were the days."

I worked in the clinical lab directed by "Dr Lit", as we fondly called him. Although my time in the lab was brief, our paths seemed to often cross in the hospital. "Dr Lit" was a true southern gentleman, medical leader and true lighthouse of ethics and professionalism. He made himself available to us all as a friend.
He sought the "higher ground" in all endeavors and encouraged everyone to do the same, not only in words but in action. He was the perpetual professor to those who would listen and take time to learn.
Thank You God for putting him in our lives, thank you to the family who shared him with us and thank you "Dr Lit" for all the memories you shared with us!
