Dr. J.P. ‘Joy Patricia’ Burke, age 77, of Wellsboro, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in the comfort of her daughter’s home, surrounded by her loving family. Born March 18, 1948, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she was the daughter of the late Edward F. & Rita L. (Titus) Burke.
Joy dedicated her life’s work to expanding the knowledge of her students, as a professor of psychology, and more specifically, excelling in the fields of criminal and child psychology. She obtained her Doctorate in Psychology from Rutgers University, served as chair of psychology at the University of Central Missouri, taught briefly at Arizona State University, and lastly retired as a professor of psychology with Mansfield University. Joy was adored by all her students, serving as Associate Prevost, Dean of Students, and Dean of Professional & Graduate Programs at Mansfield University. She submerged herself in her work and took great pride in her research as a major contributor to the American Psychological Association. She was a key player in the development of Kansas City Charter School.
Outside of her profession, Joy’s greatest passion in life was spending time with her family. To say her and her mother were best friends would be an understatement, as they did everything together. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, whether she was browsing through antique and estate sales with her daughters or practicing interior design with her grandchildren. She also loved art, dancing, and music, specifically jazz music. Joy lit up any room she walked into with her contagious personality and incredible sense of humor.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Caitlin Sumler, of Hinton, OK, and Emily Burke (Thomas Root), of Wellsboro; grandchildren, Abbey, Madison, Zoe and Henry; several cousins and many dear friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend Joy’s memorial service on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, 11:00 a.m., at the Bennett Presbyterian Church, 501 Bennett St, Luzerne, PA 18709, with Rev. James Quinn officiating. She will be laid to rest with her family in Memorial Shrine Park, Wyoming, PA. "But most of all, I remember Mama...." Funeral services are entrusted to Wilston-Currie Funeral Home, Mansfield, www.wilstoncurriefh.com.
