Dr. Orbie Lee Stewart was born in Amory, Mississippi on January 17th 1938. He passed away on May 22nd 2024 at his home in El Paso Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Delores (Tena) Stewart, his parents Mr. Spurgeon Stewart and Mrs. Annie Stewart of Tuscaloosa Alabama, his siblings Era Mae Smith, George Robert Whitfield, and Dorothy Jean Dinkins. He is survived by his son Douglass Stewart, daughters Rosaland Stewart, Paula Nelson, and granddaughter Trinity Nelson, also surviving are his extended family members Loretta Hamilton, Theodis Davis, Jimmy Davis, Lenora Gray, nieces, and nephews.
Orbie was a retired Sergeant Major who received a Purple Heart for his military service. He earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling Services and Human Resource Development and a PHD in Adult Education. He was a member of the NAACP El Paso Branch, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated (Theta Delta Lambda Chapter), The Sergeants Major Association, and The American Legion Post 832. He was a longtime member USASMA Chapel and most recently Unity Missionary Baptist Church. As a community leader, he leaves a lasting impression as a teacher, mentor, advocate, and public speaker.
Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00pm on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home - Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass Dr. Funeral Service will begin at 12:00pm on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home - Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass Dr. Committal Service to follow at 1:30pm on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave.
