Dr. Robert Greco passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, in Charlotte, NC. He was born August 31, 1924, in Rivesville, WV, to the late Antonio and Filomena Greco.
Robert was preceded in death by his six siblings, Mary, Frank, Sarah, Joe, Mike, and John.
His loving wife of 56 years, Belva Jeane Orell Greco, passed away on October 9, 2006.
Robert attended grade school in Everettville, WV. When his family moved to Morgantown, he became a member of the Morgantown High School class of 1942 and graduated from West Virginia University in 1944. He received his Doctor of Medicine after graduating from the WVU School of Medicine in 1946 and the Medical College of Virginia in 1948.
Robert interned at Ohio Valley General Hospital in Wheeling, WV. He completed one year of OBGYN residency at Ohio Valley General Hospital, followed by a second year at St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Louisville, Kentucky.
Upon completion of his residency in 1951, Robert served his country as Chief of OBGYN Services at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona.
After his discharge from the Air Force in 1955, he returned to Morgantown to practice medicine. Later, he established Greco, Stevens, and Kerr Obstetrics & Gynecology. After forty-three years and approximately 10,000 baby deliveries, Robert began his long and well-earned retirement.
A family friend said, “What a legend he was to the city of Morgantown. He literally brought life into that community! Job well done!!”
Dr. Bob, Doc, and Poppy—as he was affectionately known in his later years—was an avid reader with a voracious sweet tooth. He was a golfer and an expert at finding spots where he could soak up sunshine. Dr. Bob enjoyed all things sports and will continue to cheer for WVU from his box seats in Heaven.
Poppy is survived by his devoted daughter Toni of Charlotte, NC, and his son John (Robyn) of Marietta, GA.
He held a special place in his heart for his four granddaughters, Jaryn Phelps (Chris) and Lexi Grandstaff (Austin) of Charlotte, NC; and Macy Bridges (Trey) and Madison Greco (Emily) of Marietta, GA.
Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Shipley Andrew Phelps, Poppy Ro Phelps, Miller Pence Grandstaff, Grey Baker Grandstaff, Eleanor Jane Bridges, and June Louise Bridges.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Brightmore of South Charlotte. Julie, Sunny, Josie and Jessica as well as countless others, brought light to Dr. Bob’s life each day. Thanks also to Katie and Chaplain Ed from Hospice Care and to all who made our father and Poppy comfortable in the final years of his life.
