Dr. William Edwin Hovenden, 84, of Gallatin, passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee. Born January 31, 1941, in Shenandoah, Iowa, he was the son of the late Roland Carver Hovenden and Berniece Margaret Van Wyngarden. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of dedication to education and community service.
For an impressive 27 years, Bill served as the Headmaster at Sumner Academy, where he displayed a profound commitment to the welfare of both teachers and students. His passion for education was evident in the way he nurtured young minds, fostering an environment that encouraged growth and learning.
Bill's influence extended beyond his role at Sumner Academy. He was an active member of the Gallatin Noon Rotary and played a vital role in founding Peer Place in Hendersonville. His efforts extended to supporting Edison School in Madison, institutions dedicated to assisting individuals with developmental and learning differences. His advocacy for these causes illustrated his compassionate nature and dedication to improving the lives of others.
Bill's educational journey was marked by numerous achievements. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell College, followed by a Master’s Degree from Indiana University, and concluded his studies with a Doctorate from Florida State University. His thirst for knowledge was insatiable, reflecting his belief in the power of education to transform lives.
Among his proudest accomplishments, Bill was one of the very first members of the Peace Corps, a calling inspired by President Kennedy's iconic speech, urging citizens to contribute to their country. His initial assignment took him to Cameroon, Africa, a testament to his selflessness and willingness to serve communities in need.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Valerie Hovenden, and brother Doug Hovenden.
Bill is survived by his son, Jonathan Hovenden; stepson, Kieran (Ashley) Groth; grandsons, Braden Groth and Rodney Groth; brother, Bob Hovenden; and sister, Karee Henshaw.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 20, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and again on Friday, November 21, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Alexander Funeral Home & Cremation Center, located at 584 Nashville Pike, Gallatin, TN 37066. A Funeral Service will be held Friday at 3:00 PM. A reception will follow at Sumner Academy 464 Nichols Lane, Gallatin, TN 37066.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sumner Academy's Hawk Fund.
Bill's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, service, and dedication to the betterment of others. He will be deeply missed but remembered fondly by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
