Duane Goers Obituary

Duane (Skeeter) J. Goers, 95, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Marion and Clinton, Iowa, passed away peacefully to his heavenly, eternal rest on January 7th, 2025. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 pm, Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on January 16th, 2025, at the "Old" St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 995 5th Avenue, Marion, Iowa. Inurnment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Duane was born April 15th, 1929, to Amanda L. and Fred E. Goers in Lyons, Iowa. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1947. Duane married the love of his life, Marilyn E. Everett in Omaha, Nebraska on June 21st, 1952; they shared 65 beautiful years of marriage together. In 1953, Duane enlisted in the Iowa National Guard, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class, Battery A, 556th Field Artillery Battalion. Duane worked as a meat cutter for Eagle/Lucky Foods in Clinton, Iowa, retiring in 1991 after 37 years. Duane was a fisherman and took great pride in teaching his two grandsons how to fish as they grew up. Duane loved his two Scottie dogs Rokee and Babe; taking them on many walks daily in their neighborhood. Duane loved planting a yearly, large garden and beautiful flower beds at their home. He loved to travel with Marilyn and their family. He enjoyed being called "Grandpa Duck" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making them laugh when he talked like Donald Duck. Duane is survived by his daughter, Kathleen (Mark) Wilden; two grandsons, Matthew (Janda) Wilden and Jeffrey (Megan} Wilden, as well as six great-grandchildren: Brynn, Luke, Reid, Kage, Klover and Kinnick. He is also survived by a nephew, Steven (Willona) Goers and niece, Lynn Hixson. Duane was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn; two infant children, daughter, Patricia Marie Goers and son, Thomas Gerard Goers; a brother, Donald F. Goers and nephew, Lee A. Goers. We know that Duane is now forever perfect in God's loving arms and is overjoyed to be reunited again in heaven with Marilyn. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him, especially Kathy, who he always called #1 Daughter. Special thanks go out to all the care staff at both the Meth-Wick Manor and the Meth-Wick Woodlands, Lynch Neighborhood, for giving such excellent and loving care to Duane ever since he joined the Meth-Wick Community in 2016. Additional thanks to the Mercy Hospice Nursing staff that provided care to Duane over the last year. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Breakthrough T1D (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) or the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.cedarmemorial.com under Obituaries.
