Earlene (Shaw) Moomaw, 94, was called home to be with her Lord and Beloved husband on Monday, November 17, 2025. She was a resident of Sugarcreek since 1952.
She was born in Akron City Hospital on July 22, 1931 to the late Earl Bryan and Inez Smith Shaw. She has two brothers and two sisters, all deceased: June Reif of
Sugarcreek, OH, Ruth (Fred) Snowden of Akron,OH, Jack (Candace) Shaw of Walnut Creek, California, Ed (Beverly) Shaw of Willows, California; and her husband Howard Momaw and daughter-in-law Jane Moomaw also preceded her.
Her family moved from Akron to Bolivar in 1940. Earlene graduated from Bolivar High school in 1949 and Akron Actual Business College in 1950. She worked at Goodyear Synthetic Rubber Corp. until her marriage to Howard Moomaw on February 24, 1952. She assisted her husband in the operation of Moomaw Chevrolet, Inc. in Sugarcreek.
Earlene was a member of the Sugarcreek United Methodist Church where in her earlier years directed the Chancel Choir for 30 years as well as a Junior and Cherub Choir. She and Howard served as Youth Fellowship Directors for many years. Earlene served as pianist when needed.
She joined the Fortnightly Music Club of New Philadelphia in 1953 and was a past President as well as a past Board Member of The Philharmonic Orchestra. She was a Board Member for The Tuscarawas County Mental Health Board and a past President of the Citizens Advisory Counsel for 10 years.
From 1975-1985 Earlene served as Queen Chairman for The Ohio Swiss Festival Association. She was also vocalist for The Swiss Hilltoppers Orchestra and often played the alphorn and Swiss bells for various musical engagements.
Earlene was instrumental in forming the Garaway Senior Center on March 12, 1979, which is in operation today. She served as a Board Member since the Center was founded.
She was a 50 Plus year member of Eastern Star and she and Howard were members of The Tuscarawas County Shrine Club.
Earlene enjoyed traveling with her husband Howard to such places as Mexico, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Japan, Tahiti, Switzerland, London, and Spain.
Her greatest joy in life was her family. Surviving are he son Randy Moomaw and daughter Lori Moomaw both of Sugarcreek; her beloved grandchildren are Geoff (Courtney) Helmilnger of Hinckley, OH, Lindsay (Jeremy) Feador of Rocky River, OH, Melissa (Chaz) Fralick of Columbus, OH, and Greg Moomaw of New Philadelphia, OH; her great grandchildren Addison and Evan Helmlinger and Ellie Inez and Simon Feador.
Services will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025 at 12 PM (Noon) at Smith-Varns Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Eckert officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 11-12
at the funeral home prior to services.
