Weyman Edgar Cannington, Jr. was born November 24, 1941, in Donalsonville, GA, the son of Weyman Sr. and Helen Barber Cannington. He was a graduate of Seminole County High School, Valdosta State College, and John Marshall School of Law. Ed pursued a career in law that would span decades, earning a reputation as a tireless advocate who believed in leveling the playing field for the underprivileged in the legal system. Known for his sharp mind, commanding presence, and unwavering sense of justice, he earned the nickname, "Perry Mason."
Beyond the courtroom, Ed served as mayor of Lumpkin for an extraordinary 28 years, as a board member and executive committee member for Westville, and as a board member for Columbus Technical College. His leadership helped shape the community and his impact will be felt for generations. In addition to his civic and legal career, Ed proudly served in the Georgia National Guard, retiring with honor. His commitment to service, whether to his country, his town, or his clients, defined the way he lived his life. However, nothing compared to his favorite title, "Granddaddy".
Survivors include his son, LTC (RET) Weyman E. "Trey" Cannington, III; his grandchildren, Cody & Hannah Bennett and Carson & Cody Aeger; and his great-grandchildren, Zoey, Marlee, and Selah. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Patty Cutchens Cannington; his daughter, Jill Cannington Bennett; and his sister, Beth Cannington Corley.
