Mrs. Edith Marie (Newman) Behnke, of Elkhorn, Walworth County, Wisconsin passed away 23 August 2018 at home after a long illness. Formerly Edith lived in Sheffield, Illinois. Edith Newman was born on September 18, 1934 at home on the family farm in Annawan, Illinois, to the late Edith Wells and the late Tom Newman, passed away at age 83 on August 23, 2018 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin at home peacefully in her sleep. Edith M. Newman graduated from Sheffield High School in Sheffield, Bureau County, Illinois in 1952. Her family lived on a farm in Sheffield, Bureau County, ILL and later on the family moved to town in Sheffield, Illinois. Later on Edith moved to Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois when she was married on 5 May 1957 to David Fred Behnke of Kewanee, Illinois at Sheffield. Edith had prior to work at a local dry cleaners as a clerk in Sheffield as well as a secretary at a car dealership in Sheffield, Illinois. Edith later on moved with family in November 1968 over to Pell Lake, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Later the family moved over to Elkhorn, Walworth County, Wisconsin in 1976. Edith Behnke was a Sales Clerk in the Hardware Store in the Paint Dept. until retiring in 2016 after working there 39 years. Edith was the loving wife of the late David Fred Behnke. Edith had cancer over 10 years she fought her health issues. Edith was a very loving mother and friend to everyone she met. Edith Behnke worked at the same hardware store for 39 years before her retirement because of her health reasons. She left behind in 2018 her son, Ken D. Behnke at home and a daughter, Tina M. Behnke. She was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur Newman and a sister, Ruth Ada Newman Van Hyfte; grandmothers, Mary Jane Locke Wells of Annawan, ILL and England and Christianna Ashford Newman of Kingston, England; grandfathers, Christopher Wells of Annawan, ILL and Alfred Abraham Newman of Kingston, England; Both of her grandfathers were farmers as well as her dad was also a farmer. Edith's niece, Judith Arlene Newman Ellis preceded her. Great grandparents also preceded her: James Wells and Elizabeth Palmer Wells of Ley Hill, England, John Lock of England and Annawan and Sarah Humber Lock of Annawan, ILL. Her sister, Evelyn Agnes Newman Hansen, of Sheffield, Bureau County, Illinois later passed as well on 9 October 2018 in Galva, Henry County, Illinois. Edith had a passion for interior painting of houses when she was a landlord many years ago. She liked to do gardening, cooking, yard work, embroidery, reading, and loved her dogs, cats and birds. She had many nieces and nephews which she also left behind. She attended Sunday School when young at the Congregational Church in Sheffield. She was also married at the Congregational Church in Sheffield. Later the family went to the Congregational Church in Kewanee, ILL, and also in Genoa City, Wisconsin, and she was years ago a member of Mothers Club in Pell Lake, Wisconsin. In lieu of sending flowers simply plant a flower on your own yard.
